I got another new substrate to try, it's a recyled paper based bedding called Fitch. It's available direct from the maker's website, it's £18 for a 20kg sack delivered. www.fitchrecycling.co.uk/animal-bedding/fitch-pet-bedding.htmlYou get a massive sack that is very well compressed: The pieces are medium sized, bigger than megazorb, maybe a little smaller than carefresh. It's nice and soft and seems pretty low in dust, it doesn't have any smell. I think the Fitch is really good. I'm only using it in potty areas at the moment, I have aubiose elsewhere, which I like better now than I seemed to say a year ago in my review above. I'm trying to completely get rid of the megazorb because the smell has got worse and the dust seems worse, even though it's the best IMO for soaking up urine. I'm having a slight problem with the fitch in that my goos want to take it all to make a nest with, and I'm desperately trying to limit nest material so that my goo with breathing issues doesn't sleep with a face full of dusty stuff, but I don't imagine that would be a problem for most people. It seems like it would actually be a pretty good product as substrate and for nesting material. I think Fitch is the best of this type of paper based bedding that I have seen in that it is soft, particle size is reasonable, it's low dust, no smell and reasonably priced.

Sounds good, and I like the look of it in your picture. It would sure be nice to have a few more options for substrate and bedding in Canada.

Glad I started going through this thread. I've always used woodshavings with my gerbils and house rabbit, partly because we lived near a saw mill that used to let us in the hopper and help ourselves to as much as we wanted (bring own sacks) for a quid. These guys never used to kick it (bunny rarely spent time in her indoor hutch), so I only really had dusty sneeze and itch issues when changing. With my mini hurricanes, I spend most of the time sneezing, and even Scaredygoo occasionally has sniffles.
I've spent hours looking around and reading goo and non goo feedback, and decided to try some carefresh. I managed to find big packets with a fiver off RRP, so will give them a change tonight. They tend to wee on the shelves, and woodshavings are always dry when I change them. Most of the poo is dumped outside the cage too, so I'm hoping it won't be too expensive in the long run!

If you like the Carefresh, then I think it's well worth ordering a sack of Fitch, it's quite similar but a fraction of the price. If you see the the sack at the top of this page that I ordered almost a year ago, I still haven't finished it! (although I do mix it with aubiose).

Excellent, I'll bear that in mind! It's an experiment for now, but I'll certainly go for that if it works

Well, despite some weird looks initially, the goos are loving the carefresh. Because I only put substrate on two of their four level (one pine that they like to gnaw and one sheet metal), I only used just over half a pack! Will definitely get some Fitch when I finish what I ordered! Most importantly, my nose is completely dry, and my skin isn't irritated. I'll check Scaredygoo's nose in the morning

Excellent!! I hope you are all in great condition, both noses and skins, in the AM.

That stuff looks fine to me - I make my lot shred their own by giving them a toilet roll

From what I remember when I worked at a stables, aubiose just has a distinctive smell to it naturally, some people didn't mind it but I remember hating having to do anything with that bed because I didn't like the smell of it. Admittedly, it could have had something else in it that was causing the smell but I'm not willing to buy a bale to find out

I use Carefresh and the goos seem to like it just fine. Though it is at least twice as expensive as the Cocoon aubiose.
For the people who buy aubiose, do you buy the normal horse version, or the small animal cocoon line?

I didn't know there was a small animal version. I live in a farming area so I can buy the horse bails locally.
Maybe the flaxbiose (or other similar thing) might suit if you are sensitive to the aubiose smell, @randomename rates that higher than aubiose anyway. It's funny how we react to the smells, I can't stand pine woodchips with animals smells on top, I presume because of how stressed I was when I first got hamsters and they were on pine.
