I purchased a large bag of the National Geographic Pets Comfort Small Animal Bedding from PetSmart and was alarmed to see little bits of stuff that didn't fall into their "recycled paper" claim. Aluminium foil, plastic wrap, food particles and hard plastic like the kind from a bottle cap were some of the items I found in just a very small sampling. They claim it's safe for all small animals, but I definitely do not recommend this product for Degus.

Did you contact their customer service about this as well? They need to know asap! I would let petsmart know as well (email to head office and take it in to show your local store manager)
Scary stuff!

I tweeted the photo to Petsmart, and hashtagged NATGEOPETS. I also called the manager of the store where I bought it, and I'm bringing it back in for a refund. Other than that, I wouldn't expect much more than a form reply about how it meets or exceeds standards, etc...

Wow!
Got to love the power of social media, glad you've tweeted about it, should get shared amongst others, at least.

I think with recycled bedding it's fair to expect the very occasional strange item mixed in there, but that does look quite dangerous!
I've added a link to this thread in our bedding review thread.

I just bought this bedding to use as a litter for my 2 Guinea pigs. I didn't notice anything like you showed yet but I will watch out for it.
As mentiond above because it is recycled paper other things can sometimes appear in it that shouldn't be there. It may so be that they had a bad batch with such items in it but their machine didn't detect it.

I brought it back to the store and the manager came and looked at it. With just one glance at the bag, he spotted more foil. He brought the bad to his office to discuss with corporate. My husband pointed out that it was like they had made the mulch by recycling the garbage can from a food court or fair.
