Painkilling injection should be good for 24hrs, depending on what the extra was, it might tail off after that, see how he is later tomorrow. If you are worried about cleanliness, you can take all substrate out and just wipe up the wees when you see them and sweep up a couple of times a day, or as necessary. I would probably offer some mushy food, or Critical Care if you have some, just offer it to him on a saucer or similar for today, I wouldn't syringe feed him today, restraining him is going to be painful for him. Put his regular food on the same level as him if you can, or some of it. I've used tea towels to wrap a Snugglesafe over the normal cover because I have lots and can wash them easily, might be softer than kitchen roll, although kitchen roll should be fine. I'm not sure I would do the bathing with him having a check up so soon, but it's entirely up to you. I didn't know about the sunken in sides, it looks quite shocking. I'm glad Goolover was able to tell you she saw this with hers. goolover, does that improve with recovery? As long as the teeth themselves are straight they should level off really quickly. Did the vet examine his molars?

Was it the vets who said it is only for humans or he pharmacy?

Sorry, spamming a little bit. River had really sucked-in sides, looking back at photos of him- but he fattened up again quite quick

Okay. Well vet said the injection lasts 48 hours but I'd rather go with you guys. I'll make some mush up now lol. I wasn't gonna syringe feed him unless desperate - bought the syringes just in case My tea towels are rougher than a pair of dogs *naughty word* so my kitchen roll is definitely softer and more comfy. I won't bathe then until after the checkup in case it causes a problem. I have it ready anyway. I was shocked with the sides too! Didn't expect it. Glad goolover has experienced it too! They said she's examined his mouth yeah. She was very thorough and seemed to be very degu wise. She said they treat all the degus from pets at home, all the ones for sale. The teeth are straight, just at a tiny bit of a tilt, rather than dead flat. They like are like a "\" but very very slight. The bottom teeth are dead flat. The pharmacy where I bought it from titchycatnipsandwich.

The pharmacy is obliged to tell you it isn't for animal use, they could get into legal trouble otherwise.
A quick google says 1:10 for cats and dogs, I definitely had to use it more concentrated/less diluted than that, but 1:10 obviously also works. More diluted would mean less of a problem if he licked at it.

Yes once the pain is over he will puff out again, I don't know what causes this, the way they hold themselves afterwards perhaps! They arch their back and walk very tenderly so everything looks like its sucked in. He will loose wait quick and his sides will look worse because of the weight loss but don't worry he will be absolutely fine but the next 2 days he will look worse than he does now. Just to prepare you as it is shocking to see.

The issue with his sides could be because he is holding his stomach muscles up off the floor a little, it's perfectly normal to try to keep the site of a wound off a surface. If you breath in and hold your stomach in you will see what I mean. We had a dog who did this when he had a problem with his 'bits'.
I'd move everything to one level and keep it in easy reach for him, at least for today.

Makes sense!
I think you will have to decide for yourself whether to bathe or not, Titchy has lots of wound experience, I'm just thinking about not messing with him while he is in pain.

Making mulch food is hard by hand. Sat on the floor crushing each bit with the end of a rolling pin.
Is there anything that needs to be in it? I'm just crushing Science Selective nuggets then gonna add water

Mashed veg, dregs from forage bag, baby food, crushed seeds, water porridge, you can use anything.
Just thinking, with the degu nuggets, just leave them to soak for a bit in a little water and then mash them with a fork, easy!

I've tried that. They don't mash. They go sticky like really sticky and just don't come apart lol!
Okay. I don't eat veg so I have no veg, have no dregs of forage bags as I've got all new fresh yesterday 😫. No baby food, I'll buy that tomorrow, any particular brand or type? I have no clue what water porridge is lol. Anything else I could try? X

Can he have wheetabix? They're no worse than oats?

LOL! And I thought I was being clever with soaking the nuggets! (Umm, you don't eat veg??) You could get dregs from the bottom of a new bag of forage if you can ferret your hand to the bottom. Baby food has to be all veg, no meat, preferably no fruit, you will find one jar if you are lucky. I just meant porridge made with oats and water, no milk. You could save yourself some hassle and just get a sachet of Critical Care or Supreme Recovery, but you can only get them online or at the vets. Mind you, it's very hit and miss what they will eat voluntarily out of all those things, so probably best trying a couple of options, and if you are struggling, lace everything with nuts.

Wheatabix only as last resort as it contains sugar and salt too I would think. The only safe human processed cereal is shredded wheat with nothing added.

Okay so boiling water worked, hot water or cold water didn't, and a fork, so props to you for keeping me trying that method!
Currently have mushed Science Selective with a chive and lemon balm and basil added (not much).
Yeah I don't like fruit or veg lol. I was a really fussy child and that's something I've still not mastered haha. Except peas.
Can I put mushed peas in?
I'll avoid wheetabix. Didn't realise it had anything added tbh.
I'll look out for baby food tomorrow xx

So I was gonna crush a hazelnut to put in. Do you think I could break the shell? Given it to Kev to see if he'd be interested in it at all. He blooming is! Giving it a right good gnawing. Hopefully he can open it and eat it. He's not running all around the shop just sat chewing. He's buried everything else so I'm hopeful he'll eat it.
Made some mulch. Looks gross. Saved half to put in the fridge.

I use Ella Organics carrot or pea baby food. I have a nutribullet, so just put a slack handful of everything he normally eats in with the grinding attachment and blitzed it. Mushed peas work in a pinch. TBH, don't worry too much if he's not interested in eating. He's in a lot of pain and it screws with their appetite. River perked himself up about 24h post-op and started eating like a starved thing, but wasn't interested in anything up until that point. After all of Zoe's minor surgeries, he's been off food for at least 12h. It's to do with the anaesthetic as well, probably makes them nauseous (does in humans). Gnawing on a nut is a good start for him though

Thanks! You guys have been great! ❤❤
I just want him to have options lol. He's got his usual daily food available, a mulch version and lots of nuts to try. ☺️
Thank God for snugglesafes though ay?
