Bear in mind from recent experience that PaH nuggets can add 30g to a degu in a very short time...
I think either way, this is what's best for Kev right now. If he is 6m, hopefully he's developed enough for it to not matter. Part of me is wondering how they neuter a degu?
Like, in humans, you don't remove any parts of the male, you just tie them off, so no loss of testosterone production. Females can either be tied off or removed depending on the procedure. If you tie off a female, you still get hormone production, if you remove the ovaries you get drops in oestrogen levels.

Emily, make sure that you have your name on all the individual parts of the snugglesafe so that it doesn't stay behind at the vets. I lost a few leashes that way.

Good luck em, have been through 2 castrations and my boys didn't eat for 2/3 days afterwards and lost alot of weight but quickly put it back on once the pain subsided and they started to eat again. Joey went through a bad time with the pain and had a penile prolapse afterwards so his recovery was slow. I always like to have in recovery food for things like this incase they don't eat for themselves so if you have some then it may come in handy.

Just dropped him off. He's 220g. They're using just gas as the anaesthetic as it's safer. I was blooming late because the swine could clearly sense something was up and did everything to avoid me. They're gonna do his claws and teeth too. Gotta get him later! Here's hoping everything goes okay.

They also glue his wounds up. She said stitches are pointless he will chew them off. Separated for at least six weeks because obviously he still has sperm. Seem to know what she was doing.

Good luck, Kev (Bumfit)! I'm pretty sure they remove the testes. I think the drop in testosterone for small pets is usually considered a good thing, although degus still produce it in their adrenals, which is why it doesn't help so much with aggression for degus. You can edit a post by clicking on the cog wheel dropdown at the top right of the post.

Had a phone call, it all went well, he's in recovery! 😂 made me laugh, the way they told me. They couldn't keep it serious because one, they find his name absolutely brilliant, two it's a degu lol. Bless. Gotta pick him up at 4 ☺️ Moms taking me so I don't have to waste money on a taxi back, like I had to get a taxi there this morning because I was oh so late.

I'm thinking if all goes well, then perhaps add them to the vets list? Like I said we've been going there for years with our dogs, put our cat down very dignified.
I'll see how it goes but I think perhaps maybe add it if they're very good? Or put them on the list and add *only had castration done here*.
She knew a lot about degus though it seemed and she was very confident and she's not even the best vet there. Gavin is.

Got some pictures yay! It looks so weird. They aren't just lines, his sides are like sunken in? Like is that just the gap from how big his balls were? Has she taken out like some vital organs or something?! 😱

Hmmmm no meds makes me worry Em, thinking how bad my 2 boys were with the pain. They loose weight at a amazing speed and both of the boys sides were sunken in as soon as we picked them up, limping around the place and yes looking very sorry for themselves. I understand the OD'ing thing but don't think they have the say so to remove pain management away from the owner. Especially a castration as its very invasive. See how you get on though hun, wishing kev a speedy recovery x

My 2 boys both needed heat and didn't move from their bed for 2/3 days as I don't think they could regulate their own body heat. Think he will favour his snugglesafe so as long as its kept warm he will probably just sleep alot. I also took the drinking bottle to them every 2 hours to tempt them to drink as they didn't eat or go near the water the first night. Go with the flow though and don't worry as he could recover fast but again be prepared to go and grab some meds for him incase he struggles. Think you will be surprised at his weight loss but he's in good hands with you

Okay so, more concise so people don't have to read the mess above (EDIT: I've deleted the mess above and made this post so you all don't get annoyed lol!!!)
Snugglesafe has been made more hygienic (didn't know hygienic had two "i's" in, learn something new every day) gonna keep wrapping it in kitchen roll so it's clean.
Bottom layer which is tissue bedding based which could stick to wound has been covered with a towel.
Top level is just cardboard still. May cover that with a towel once I have a clean towel available (whoops).
Gonna move water bottle next to snugglesafe so he can be lazy.
Food is above him. He's got all his usual stuff plus lots of sunflower seeds might throw in some more treats too.
He ate half a sunflower seed for me just. Was chewing for a very long time. But he has had his teeth trimmed a lot. She didn't do the top ones dead straight unfortunately, there's a tiny tiny bit of an angle to them. Bottom are dead straight. Loads shorter as they were really long. Seems to eat very awkwardly which I presume is a combo between new teeth and pain meds. At least he's sort of interested. Not interested in water at all.
They gave him an injection of metacam and something else.. which I will edit in once I've found the paper. Which will last 48 hours. Seeing vet Friday 4pm so if he's still seems like he's dying and it's the end of the world I'll ask for another injection.
I have syringes which I could make a mush food to force feed him if I have to. Bought them from boots.
I have also got Hibiscrub (apparently it's for humans only). I just need to know how much to dilute it, I might bathe the wound once a day. I guess over diluting is better than under.
He just looks majorly uncomfortable. Can't find a good lying position, especially now I've covered the snugglesafe with kitchen roll lol, Kev does not approve.
They gave me an aftercare sheet which was really good! Full of good stuff.
He's got a ladder he can walk to his food shelf (might scatter nice treats on the level where he's lay though, although he has been up to the food level and nibbled a tiny bit on something).
Hmmm think that's all.

Ok, the dilution was definitely at least 1 part hibiscrub to 1 part clean water. You could go 1 part hibiscrub to 2 parts water easy, it should still be effective. Just keep an eye on his skin, maybe only use it once a day to start with?
