So the search feature on the app for this forum is appalling and I can't seem to find much about castration!
Kev goes in tomorrow, blooming 9am too. I have little clue what to expect except (that was difficult to type lol!) a drugged up chubby cheeked degu to pick up at 5pm.
I'm guessing he can't have his wheel. He will have stitches, I don't know if they're gonna be dissolvable ones though. I know he has to go for a few checkups and if stitch removal is necessary it's all included in the price.
I'm guessing he'll be in a fair bit of pain, I'll obviously have pain meds to give him which will be interesting as he has no interest of being picked up lol! 😂 I have to let him run onto the windowsill and then scoop him up... he does not appreciate it. Maybe if he's drugged up he'll be a bit more manageable.
How long will healing take?
Sorry just need some advice if anyone has any! I'm sure all will be fine. Guess it's helpful for future reference for others too.

He's going to feel pretty beaten up for a few days, castration is quite hard on them due to the testes being within the abdomen. (That's why it isn't so commonly done and why we don't go recommending it all over the place even though mixed sex groups can work well and sometimes solves a problem (like here)).
No sand, probably no wheel for a couple of days, I'd be surprised if he wants to wheel for a couple of days. Heatpad will be appreciated, plenty of metacam.
The main things to look out for are good healing of the wound and penile prolapse. Penile prolapse can be quite common after castration because the swelling after the surgery can be considerable and it just pushes the penis out.
He's going to feel really rough for about 3 days, not doing too bad after a week, and 2 to 3 weeks for decent recovery, but it does vary.

😳 penile prolapse? I don't even know what a degu penis looks like yet. What on earth have I gotten myself into? 😂
Okay. How will I know what a penile prolapse looks like? Will it be like the full thing hanging out? 😩
No baths, check. Wheel I will take out the first three days, perhaps put it back in on the fourth or fifth day if all is looking good. He loves his heatpad anyway, I've stolen it from Poppy (I only have two), and he's loving it, he's already made a nest on it.
And thanks for the good luck wish! I'm sure he's gonna feel like he needs it lol.

Gross bit alert!
A degu penis is over an inch long so you really can't miss it if it prolapses. The hard part is getting it to go back in and after surgery I would get the vet to do it.
I'm sure he will be fine. I'd make sure everything is on one level for him too so he doesn't have to climb for anything and there's nothing for him to fall off.

OVER AN INCH?! 😱😱😱 there are things I didn't need to ever know or imagine and that's one of them. 😂 that is not an appropriate penis size relation to the size of the animal jeez.
I'll remove anything for him to fall off of, he's very clumsy as it is 🙄.
Thanks!

LOL it might only prolapse a bit, but I don't think you would mistake it. Search works fine on desktop site, but I probably wouldn't recommend you start looking today, you'll only worry yourself. Forgot to say good luck!

Okay! I won't look lol.
Thanks!
Just concerned about getting him in the carry case 😂 they've told me to take his food so I'll take a tub with his daily lot in.
Him and Poppy warble to each other all day long, Pickle is getting a bit neglected as Poppy is swooning over Kev, so Pickle is getting lots of time out of her cage and crawling in my sleeves.
Kev does when I can,
Pinky does every night, as she leaps into my arms every time I open the door. Perky I have no chance lol, can't even trick her with a tube anymore.
Poppy I dare not risk it. She gets loads of fuss whilst in her cage, she doesn't let me pick her up like Pickle does, and I dare not try any other method because trying to catch her for three hours makes me wanna strangle someone lol!
Hopefully the windowsill trick works tomorrow morning otherwise I'm gonna be late 😂

Naw, not thick as a pencil, probably less than half as thick, unless English pencils are thinner than American ones....but definitely over an inch.
And yes, eeewwww.

Definitely don't look at my old thread about River (I think I called it neutering rather than castrating).
The take home message from me is "if you have him done on a Saturday, and notice a bulge on the abdomen on Tuesday, don't wait until the following Saturday to get him seen to". Bulges around the incision sites are bad.

Okay.. 😳 gonna have to go read that now.
What's the likelihood of infection or anything going wrong?
The really good vet isn't doing it, it's another one. But they trust her to do it. But that's why they want him in all day. I don't know lol. 😩 I trust them. They're very good with our dogs so.

Well, I forgot to take the sandbath out for about a day or so, so you're ahead of me there! The surgery itself is aseptic, so the risk of infection from that is low. I don't think we've had enough people neutering their goos to give you a set of statistics. Infection seems to be the most common complication; River was "overweight" (250g. She should see him now, the chunk) so she warned me of the risk of abdominal herniation as well. Let's go with "don't worry about it too much". You can always say to the vet that you've read up and infection of the surgical wounds is really common, are they willing to give you either an antibiotic for prophylaxis or Hibiscrub (it's normally diluted) to clean the abdomen twice a day. If you have any concerns, ping me pictures and I'll help where I can. I feel like I have done abscesses to the death, and could give most vets a run for their money on appropriate diagnosis and treatment of abscesses...

Okay! Thanks a lot for the offer for help! I'll ask them for some of the words above 😂. I think my boyfriends parents might have some hibiscrub, for their dog. Probably won't have any left. Hopefully it's not too expensive from the vets. I'll definitely get some to err on the side of precaution.
Kev isn't at all on the small side, if he is 5/6 months he's flaming obese.
I don't think he's that age though, he's just generally too large. I'd say 12-18 months but I could be wrong. He's the same size as Pinky and Perky who are around 12-14 months.

www.amazon.co.uk/Hibiscrub-Health-Care-500-ml/dp/B001AV4C20Buy that. I paid ~£10 for 10mL from the vets. Buy that, and dilute it... Ah, crud, I think it's 1:1 but I could be wrong. Tell them you have some and ask whether you can use it neat or do you need to dilute it. I think River's just big. He's always been big and I don't think that will change. Also, if I'm honest, I'm not sure I'd neuter a goo at 6m. From what I can tell, they've still got a lot of growing to do, and hormones drive certain areas of growth in humans - wouldn't surprise me to know degu testosterone controls more than just sexual maturity. Your vets might be able to guesstimate his age, or there was a goo growth chart around somewhere that said how old your goo was likely to be for a given weight. ETA: unless you can get the hibiscrub cheaper elsewhere. A community pharmacy might be cheaper and come in a smaller pack size.

Titchy, he's huge if he's 6 months. They told me he's 5/6 months but I just can't believe it. Could he really be bigger than my two 12-14 month old girls?
The vets didn't mention anything about age. I said they said he's six months but I believe him to be around 12 months and they said okay. He's big and he's pretty heavy. I wouldn't wanna weigh him now as he's pretty skittish and I only have like weighing scales that aren't digital, he doesn't even sit still for a treat. But I can tell you just from holding him he's at least as heavy as my two older girls, at the very least. He'd have been on a diet of p@h nuggets and hay. He had access to a wheel at all times too. He looks the size of a fully grown degu to me. He's far bigger than Poppy and especially Pickle. Poppy is around 9/10 months now? Is there any way he could be the size and weight he is and still be only 5 months old?
Pickles around 6? She's tiny though. Size of a gerbil almost lol.
I'll get hibiscrub elsewhere bar the vets x thanks for that tip.

Just got his carry case ready full of kitchen roll and toilet roll so it's comfy and I've done a tub with his daily food in. Bless like he's going on a little adventure! I think I might heat the snuggle safe up and take it in the bag with me so they can put it in wherever they're keeping him. Don't know yet.
