Dave definitely looks female, even though the pictures are so blurry. As for Flash, he is definitely male . . . and the surgery confirmed it. LOL! I hope Davina is OK! Please let us know how the vet visit goes?

The pictures don't look nearly as blurry directly from my phone which is annoying but yeah I think genders are definitely down now.
So he said it is the start of an abscess but he gave me antibiotics that are banana flavour because he said they love it so then I said does it have actual sugar in, he said yes a bit so then I said well I don't want to make her ill with sugar but he said a bit is okay as I only need to give her 0.13ml. I didn't want to argue his answer since he's the vet but I am kind of worried, I still haven't given her any yet but I obviously want her to get the antibiotics just not in that flavour, is it a big deal? should I go back tomorrow and try and get some without the flavour? I just didn't want to cause friction

Sorry, that was a brief answer so you can get the dose into her. Yes, it does have sugar in, but in this situation the risk (her infection gets worse) is outweighed by the benefit (her infection gets better, even with a bit of sugar) And it will make it a lot easier to get it into Daveena if it's slightly sweet

You can smear the top of the syringe with a teeny dab of honey too to entice him. It might be an idea if you haven't already done so, to remove the substrate from the cage and just use a clean towel/fleece for now to reduce the risk of dust etc getting into the wound. Also maybe wrap the snuggle safe in kitchen roll or make sure it always has a clean cover on to keep everything clean and reduce infection. I can't remember when I put the wheel back in as we ordered a new one at the same time so had to wait for delivery... But I gauged when he was ready for it by watching his activity levels, once he was back to his usual self I knew he was ready for the wheel. Probably a similiar time to when Emily put hers back in

Up until yesterday I had been using cardboard and switching it out everyday for new pieces as I have so much from Amazon deliveries with Dave then Flash has had a bare metal cage so I have been wiping it down when ever I can.
I put the medication on the seed as she smelt it on the syringe then ran away (werido) whereas I'm not anywhere near flash but he can smell it and clearly wants it so it's annoying she doesn't. I ended up doing half a drop on each seed as she wouldn't take it if it had too much

Flash is going mental without his wheel, I'm scared his gonna hurt himself with all the jumping and bar climbing

He's obviously feeling better! Just keep the snugglesafe warm, and it'll lure him back.

The sugar in medicines isn't enough to cause a problem.
I think you'll need to weigh up whether the climbing and jumping is putting more strain on the wound than running in the wheel would.

I have started a little personal blog that I may make public in the future but for the time being its for me as it is quite therapeutic which is why I went a bit quiet.
Dave is doing super well and I took her back for a check up and they said from the previous notes I got it wrong and it wasn't an abscess as in that it was infected and weaping it was inflammation of the tissue which apparently is quite common for degus (I saw a different member of staff at the vet this time) Flash came to as his was looking a little red and I caught him picking at it so he is on medicine too, which is super fun as he literally runs up to it then runs away and repeats until he snatches it from me whereas Dave takes hers well now. They are super interested in what the other one is doing and they talked to each other the whole way to the vet

Feel free to move this to a new topic but I have a question: Is is absolutely vital to wait six weeks after neutering to begin introductions with a female? I'm not talking straight up sharing a cage with one another but monitored face to face? As I'm thinking Boxing Day would be a great day to start as I have more time to spend start the introductions such as starting it off with them meeting in the bathtub. But that would be waiting five weeks instead of six and I don't wanna freak out if they start trying to mate, don't get me wrong I definitely don't want baby degus abut it would be nice if I could just start the process while I'm off work

I wouldn’t want to risk it. If they start mating and you can’t separate them then you’ll run the risk of having babies. I know it’s annoying. I actually waited over the 6 weeks just to be safe.

I started introductions after around 3 and a half weeks. First I just held Toby up to Boo a couple of times at her cage entrance for a few days, them I let him enter her cage for a few minutes a day to gauge reactions. This went on for about a week before I started doing formal introductions in the play pen. They met three times in the play pen and were completely loved up by this point, so they began permanently living together after around 5 and a half weeks post neutering. I know the recommendation on here is 6 weeks, but I went with the vets advice of 4 weeks. I had no mating at all during introductions, They didn't actually mate fully with each other until living together for another 2 weeks at least. Think they were both shy bless them. I had no aggression whatsoever during intros, but Toby was scared of Boo at first lol, it must have been so long since he had contact with another degu.
This was just my personal experience with the process, obviously every degu and introductions will be different and I'd always advise you follow vets advice.

My vet said 6 weeks, as the advice on here also states. It’s just that there is a risk. It’s up to you if you want to take it Poppy and Kev started doing the deed at the first introduction.

Yes my vet advised 4 weeks too. They are just super desperate to cuddle I think, they try to groom each other through the bars but Dave loses balance as she lets him do it so it doesn't really work, bless them.
You guys have such good names for your Degus too
