I am soooo sad.
I went to pets at home to get emergency forage supplies. There was an adorable degu called Kev who was up for adoption, he did have a friend called Keith but clearly they've separated them through sales.
He's a lovely chunky male, definitely male. He even let me give him chin and armpit tickles. If he was neutered I would have snapped him up. But he wasn't.
So just a little advert if anyone is looking for a male, he was lovely. Teeth seemed fine, just a little fat. No signs of cataracts. I fell in love. They kept saying he was really timid and he let me fuss him! Ugh. Why don't I have malesssss.
He's in the Pets @ Home Kidderminster store.
Someone go rescue him before I do đ

Haha look on the bright side - 2 more males popped up on the rehoming page in Northumberland this time. I think my OH would kill me, pretty sure he can count to 6 đ Of course you could always get him neutered for Poppy and Pickle

Of course you could always get him neutered for Poppy and Pickle Now stop it! Stop it right now! Do not encourage this girl!!!! How is she going to hide yet another cage? How is she going to hide yet another degu? Both of you just stop it this instant!!!! we need a finger-shaking, scolding non-smiley.

Could you get a medical exemption based on them being service or comfort animals? Over here, medical needs supercede landlord rules.

Ah now I understand Zenaida's certificate situation.
Nope, I don't think it exists in this country.
Step away from the PAH!

My friend said it does exist in terms of comfort. But you might need a disorder of some kind to have them.

Yes I've heard about 'emotional support therapy animals' - Basically they can go anywhere with you if you have proved they help you psychologically lol - someone brought a therapy pig onto a plane and got kicked off as he was squealing down the aisles đđđ

I think we all have a suitable disorder--Degu Affective Disorder. We get sad when we can't have our degus.

Love this thread!
So you guys don't have emotional support animal exceptions over there? I admit it isn't VERY common here, but people tend to know it exists. Or maybe I just know it exists because of my line of work. Over here, it is sort like you have to know about it in order to do it. Since starting our process I think we have at least 2 neighbors who followed suit because they heard about it from us and they would qualify as well. Sometimes if you're seeing a counselor or something they might recommend it.
The pig story is a bit out there. In the states there has been more "crack down" on the distinction between an ESA (emotional support animal) and a service animal because of stories like that. Once upon a time with an ESA you could get away with crazy stuff. ESAs have no formal training, very little documentation (just a doctors note for us and an email from the housing office). There is little to no distinction between an ESA and a pet other than you probably only have an ESA if your landlord has forbidden pets. An ESA is only as well (or poorly) trained as whatever their owner does to provide for them.
A service animal is highly trained (almost always professionally) and has a "job" to do. These are the animals that qualify to go every where with you. I couldn't bring a degu on a plane with me just because it is my ESA, but if somehow it was a service animal I could. Service animals are usually seeing eye dogs, seizure dogs, etc. You can even have a monkey as a service animal! Those are usually for people who have been paralyzed and the monkey fetches them items and manipulates object for them. I have a close friend who just got a service animal because she has PTSD and the dog is trained to respond to panic attacks and put her paws on my friend's chest to provide deep pressure. This makes the panic attack less serious and shorter duration.
One last sad thing: service animals need to be "maintained". In my line of work, I have met legitimate service animals that are no longer doing their "job" because the owner hasn't kept up with the dog's training. So once upon a time the dog was highly (and expensively) trained to perform a task, ignore distractions, and to serve a specific need. Well the owners didn't maintain that. They let people pet the dog "on the clock" or other such behaviors. As a result the service animal over a number of years isn't doing the job anymore. It bothers me and I wish there was a way to "declassify" them down to an ESA, because they shouldn't have that same distinction if they aren't working.

Yeah, I asked them what happened and they said they'd sold Keith. đĢ I think they're really gonna struggle to find Kev a home. âšī¸
