Hey guys, it's not brilliant news apparently the vet has advised the lump needs to be removed, I got a phone call earlier but I missed it and I have to ring back tomorrow morning to try have a detailed convo with the vet about the lump .. I feel so worthless £170 hasn't helped her and now I'm bound to be paying probably double that for an op?? the lump started bleeding again today under the scab and it just wasn't stopping, it's thick sticky blood is this what degu blood is genuinely like? The lump felt like it was pulsating as well don't know if that was just me but I was feeling it and putting a little pressure on it to try stop the bleeding I just wish one day it would pop and drain and just go down but it's not! And it literally bleeds for hours, I really didn't know what to do because every time I'm putting her back in the cage it's a risk of infection, my mum suggested putting a plaster over it but I was hesitant cos of her fur and the plaster is gonna stick to her fur and how are we gonna get it off but she seems to think soaking the plaster will loosen it and it will come off but that means pepper is gonna get a wet probably around that area!! Plus, no doubt about it but pip is gonna make a mess of that plaster later probably biting around it. I still haven't managed to separate them properly cos the ladders move and pepper squeezed through the hole down onto the 1st floor one evening when I tried to separate them and found them together... oh I jus don't know if the plaster idea was really a good idea but it's bloody on her now I'm just so stressed!! I don't want to lose her either to anastetic it's a risk isnt it with small animals! This is just a horrible nightmare

I'm so sorry Sophialeila! That is not what you, nor any of us, were hoping to hear. I am so glad that the vet you have seen did the lab work. I have wondered at the amount of bleeding you have seen. I probably wouldn't have put the plaster on, but as you said, it is already on now. I know that your mind will be running wild with questions and all the "what if's" that come flying through. It's too bad you have to wait until tomorrow morning! Try to relax and not think of it every minute, if at all possible. I'll be thinking of you!

I'm sorry to hear it's going to require surgery, but don't worry too much about the anaesthetic. They do cope with it better than we think, particularly with an experienced vet in charge. She's in good hands! The thick, sticky blood isn't usual, it should be similar to our blood when healthy so I'd mention it to the vet when you take her in. For the separation, somebody mentioned that they separated their cage by using a cooking tray with a dumbbell or other heavy object on top to outwit their degus, so it might be worth giving that our a similar idea a go? Hopefully you'll get a bit of reassurance when you speak to the vet tomorrow. Your little one seems to be a fighter so far so the fact that she's still in generally good health is really encouraging for surgery!

I too am sorry to hear that she is likely going to need surgery; however, I echo ntg – don't worry about the anesthesia. Most degus have no issue with it.
I wonder what the vet think the lump is. I think the pulsating you are feeling might be the supply of blood to it. I assume that the surgery is to remove the lump and then stitch up the area? And/or are they might try to stop the blood flowing to it? I guess you will find out when you talk to them tomorrow.
Please keep us posted.

I'm sorry it's not better news. Let us know what the vet says today.

Oh no! At least with surgery, everything will be resolved once and for all!
I was really worried about Scaredy the first time he had anaesthesia. I went to collect him and the nurse informed me that, although he'd come around OK, he hadn't eaten or drunk anything. The minute he heard my voice, he plonked his face in the food bowl and troughed the whole way home! He's since had three, and he's getting quite complacent now!

Hi everyone Unfortunately I couldn't get hold of the vet today, as each time she rang I wasn't able to pick up because of work, and every time I rang she was seeing an animal or on lunch!! So I still haven't spoken to her to get the full details! So pretty frustrating to say the least... I'm guessing the lump will be removed as the notes says remove lump advised and will be stitched.. obviously pepper is in good health (she's fairly small though, compared to pip anyways..) and she's still very active so hopefully when the time does come she'll pull through ok.. The plaster came off tonight, I won't be encouraging repeating that as it was uncomfortable for her trying to get that off from her fur too was a nightmare.. and I also noticed that the lump is actually bleeding by itself, randomly because when I had her out I was looking at it, all I did was maybe apply a little bit of pressure to it and it started pouring out of different places! That poor poor degu!!! I just feel so helpless ATM. Gave her anti's, and tried to stop the bleeding with some tissues, and applying pressure but doesn't seem that pressure in this case is stopping the bleeding, but seems to encourage it! Again the blood is fairly sticky, and seemed to be secreting some sort of yellowy discharge along with the blood.. I just hope tomorrow I can get hold of the vet to have a detailed discussion on this

Just one last thing - I really do hope that all the wait isn't doing her any harm..? the lump doesn't seem to be getting larger quickly or anything like that, as the vet did say as long as ur not worried the lump is increasing in size real fast, she should be ok to continue the anti's for a little longer before surgery, it's just the bleeding I'm worried about .. I hope she don't get anemic or something!! I will post couple pics tomoz when I get on my laptop to show the bleeding and state she is in now

You can try sprinkling cornstarch/flour over top of the bleeding area. See if that will help stop the blood.

I think the bleeding with thick blood is concerning, but the yellow discharge is encouraging because this could indicate infection or if it's pale and thick it could be sebaceous cyst discharge.

Yes, although you probably think "oh no infection" at least it sort of may signify just infection or liquid seeping from a rather large cyst. Much better of a result than the alternatives.. x

Grrrrr vet, answer the phone please!
Is the call to understand what's going on, or to arrange the surgery?

Ahhhhhh The phone call is to discuss what the lump is from the results of the sampling, and to also discuss pricing and then book in if possible.. a friend of mine said to try the pdsa too, if the vet is expensive, but I'm not sure if the pdsa deal with these sort of animals.. and if it would be wise because obviously we don't want to lose little pepper... pdsa work with donations, I know that they treated my dog a couple of times in the past too and were ok. But I'm sceptical with a degu. I jus hope the surgery isn't more than £200
I've asked earls hall if the vet can call me at 8.30 she said she's schueduled it as an appointment so should be able to get the full details in the morning

Phew! At least you know you'll speak to her tomorrow!
I agree with your skepticism - if they're not experienced with goos, you're looking at an even bigger cost than the surgery!
I'm sure your vet will be reasonable in terms of cost and payment.

Heres the photos of pepper ATM Its just constantly bleeding Ive used talc to try help with the bleeding because I dont have any flour is that ok to use?

No to the talc, styptic powder is the proper medical stuff, cornflour is OK as a substitute, but nothing else that I know of.
I would get her booked in for the surgery, I'm worried that the blood loss will be affecting her.
