Ok so the above is the lump as i found it before going to the vets... as you can see its quite small So this was after we had been to the vets.. and he squeezed it and it bled a bit and the lump came out from under the skin im guessing? And now it just looks like this! So im kinda disappointed and unsure whether the vet has just made it a whole lot worse! I think im going to register her at another vets and get a 2nd opinion, as the antibiotics have not worked one bit and I think Pip is biting it because it is always bleeding and a huge scab keeps forming on top of it. Ive finished the weeks antibiotics now, and stopped bathing it because it was making the fur around it all sticky. Whats everyones opinions!?

A new vet for sure!! And keep her away from the sand bath, it will not be helping the wound.

Oh bloody hell Im so stressed I wish I never took her there!! Was the vets inside pets at home near me (companion care) Vets r supposed to help! I had a look at your vets list but none around me unfortunately. Will register her at another one.. ok have taken the sand out the cage now, as after bathing the wound she would roll around in the sawdust or sand. I think its a tumour.. Shes going to have to have it removed and under anestetic isnt she if it is? antibiotics havent even improved the wound

The sand bath really won't have been helping with the infection, I'd recommend keeping it out and giving your other degu access separately then maybe trying the sprinkle and comb method on your girl with the wound (avoiding the wound area) when she starts to look scraggly. Do take her to another vets. Check out the vet guide and see if there is anyone that comes recommended near you deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15521/vet-guideCan you tell me which antibiotic you were put on? As I can't seem to see it anywhere. I'm guessing it's probably baytril (enrofloxacin)? If so, and the new vet wants to keep you on antibiotics while taking a swab, if they suggest another course of baytril as a stop-gap until they get the results it might be worthwhile asking about a different broad-spectrum antibiotic with fewer instances of resistance that might have a chance of working such as marbocyl (marbofloxacin). I also want to offer some moral support, I know exactly how heartbreaking it can be to be dealing with difficult wounds and just not see any progress (or indeed see it get worse). Take heart though, it can be a long and difficult journey (mine went on for well over a year of thinking it was sorted to it re-emerging several times) but once you manage to reach the end of it it's so rewarding to see that goo completely back to their cheeky little selves! And if it is a tumour, look for a vet that's experienced with degu surgeries as it'll take a little weight off your mind.

You can ring round the vets and ask if they have much degu experience, or contact any local small animal rescue places and ask who they use, but to be honest, we have lots of incidences of the PAH vets not being good, most independants will be better.
If she still rolls in the shavings after you take out the sand, it may be worth removing all substrate and just wiping down every day, or you could try something like fitch paper chunk bedding that has much less dust and small particles.
There is still a good chance it is an abscess, at least where it is and how big it is will give a decent vet a good chance of getting a needle in to get a sample without anaesthetic, although they may want to sedate anyway, that would give them a better chance to drain and wash it.
As ntg says, there are other antibiotics you can try, no improvement with one week of baytril does not mean it isn't an infection. As ntg also says, it is possible for the vet to get a sample sent away to a lab so they can work out what the infection is and what antibiotics work for that infection.
Have you been weighing her regularly? I would recommend you weigh her weekly or so, just to keep an eye on her general wellbeing.

Thank you, yeah sand bath is now out... shes booked in with another vets now for today and I have explained the situation to them. The antibiotic is indeed Baytril. I will ask about marbocyl if they do try to keep her on baytril then. I had a look at the vets list last night unfortunately the closest one to me is London and thats over an hours drive I will ask at the vet tonight if they have experience with operating on degus. The other vet actually said to me its a risk she could die after the anesthetic because of their size, which again really worried me, so I was hoping that the antibiotics were actually going to help bring it down a little. I really dont think its an abscess as there is no puss there whats so ever just a lot of blood and scabbing over. Or can it be one without any puss? I havent been weighing her but will begin to do that

Did you ask if they have experience seeing degus? I only say again because Vets4pets are another chain that makes me a little bit nervous, they might be fine though.
There is always a risk with any kind of anaesthetic. Minor procedures like dental work or biopsy are usually done with gas sedation which is less risky than general anaesthetic.

I didnt ask specifically but on their list on the site of 'which pet do u own' Degu was on the option I know it might be silly to assume they must have some experience with them to have them as an option on their site, but when i rang I just said I wanted them to look at the lump and not touch it like companion care did and without my permission stick needles in her and charge me for it! I just hate that about vets. I really dont know where else I can go as all it seems is all these chains are around me and no decent degu specialists or nothing

Ouch that looks so sore 😞 poor little girl. Have you separated her from other goo so they can't bite at it?
I'm sorry I haven't read through all the post but the antibiotic my vet has just given to Tibbs for a wound on his tail is called "sulfatrim" - this one is different to the one she gave for his dental issues. She said this one is specifically for skin wounds, so maybe this would work better?

Yeah it's never going to heal if it keeps getting picked at. I've halted intros until my boys scab is gone because its just bound to be caught or picked at.
They're so curious I can just imagine them during grooming like monkeys "hey, what's this, why isn't it coming off ... pick pick pick.. there you go!!! Oh... sorry mate... whoops"
Scab heals back
"Hey!! What's this again???" 😂😂😂

That is definitely looking very sore! They may even consider sutures! No vet should provide treatment not included in the basic consultation, without informing you of the cost, risks etc and getting your permission!
Give Earls Hall Veterinary Group a call. They have two exotics specialist, and may well have goo experience. Not sure which of their surgeries would be closest to you.

Im not going to bother going to vets4pets now.. I just rang up earls hall I actually forgot about them actually because they are just off the a127 up the road from me and I had registered with them back in 2007 for my old dog! I did ask if they see degus and said they see a lot of exotics and have dealt with degus before, so Im going to just take her there instead! Thanks

Soooo we just got back from the vets.. they took samples! Which is what they should of done at companion care!!! If they was competent... So I will be phoning tomorrow to find out the results if back.. Also the vet who saw us seemed a lot more caring for the well being of pepper, than the other one who I felt was just abrupt and didnt give a monkeys..! They reckon it could be a cyst but will know for sure when I ring up. We now have trimacare for 10 days once daily. I have had to separate the cages for a bit because I think pip is biting the wound and obviously its not helping with the healing process. The cage I have is a huge 4 tier one, so Ive had to close off the middle part with the ladders for now, and will have to keep swapping the water bottle and flying saucer every so many hours so they can take it in turn, its just started snowing and I dont think i have a spare water bottle in the house unfortunately, dont know if i can try get the car out atm but will deffo try to grab another bottle tomorrow...
