It is a beautiful urn! It is very well done. Couldn't mistake that beautify for anything else but a degu.

I can't believe I'm writing this, but late last night we lost Little Amber. Her health declined rapidly over a 24 hour period, and th decision was made that the meloxidyl was no longer enough to control her pain.
An emergency vet visit confirmed my worse fears, the sore spot on her lip had become a massive abscess which was growing up her jaw and encroaching on her eye. Not only this but it had also eaten away most of the flesh on her jaw and it was decided that with her pain levels, together with the fact she could not eat, the kindest course of action was to put her to sleep.
To say I'm numb is an understatement, I really can't believe that in the space of 10 days I've lost both Ruby the Foody and Little Amber.
I'm going to try to get Sphene and Reggie together, or at least try to introduce Sphene to other companions because she's going to find it difficult on her own. She has a heatpad and she has had a chance to say goodbye to Little Amber, but I know she needs company.

OH MY! I am SO SO SORRY!! I totally did not expect such a devastating condition to be ravishing her poor little head. This is totally heartbreaking, and I am truly stunned and grieving for you, Savvy. The kindest thing you did for her was ending her terrible suffering. Oh my goodness, I am so so sorry. I wish so deeply that I could come and sit with you.
RIP sweet, sweet Little Amber.

Do you mean Reggie or Sphene? She is allergic to Metacam? How did you learn this?

Its Reggie. I've had them both on play dates and Reggie sprained her knee while running. Vet prescribed meloxidyl and its made her ill, she's now doped up following sedation for x-rays and is on an opiate for both the pain in her leg and to recover from the after effects of the meloxidyl.

I'm posting this so people don't think I've suddenly turned into a crazed degu killer.
As you know from previous posts, Reggie was pts this afternoon. The vet did an x-ray as a comparison with the x-rays that were taken yesterday. The x-ray did show that the area around her heart was fuzzy, with the heart being difficult to see. The vet said that the only diagnosis she could make, as everything else was ruled out, was that she had heart problems, and that she had had them for a while.
The diagnosis does explain why Reggie was reluctant to run on her wheel, the only time she used it was when she was on heat, and why it was taking her longer to recover from being on heat. All of these issue, I mistakenly put down to her getting older. She was 4years and 8months.
Rest in peace my little snuggle bunny, I'll miss our cuddles so very much.

Following the devastating loss of Ruby, Little Amber and Reggie, I've had to make a decision about Sphene's future wellbeing. To this end I have decided that another degu should be given the chance of a loving home, so that Sphene can have the company she craves. So..... Let me introduce 267g of male (yes, he's being kept separately) degu attitude. He was dumped at a local cat, wildlife and wildfowl rescue centre, so we don't know much about him, except that's he's battle scarred (torn ear, weird gait, end of tail missing,) loves chewing, has been housed in a mouse cage (they had nothing bigger) in the mouse room, with only mice, rats and rabbits for company and fed only on hay because they didn't know what else they ate. Until he came here he had no name and no assigned gender as they didn't know how to sex them. Two seconds in the catch-a-goo-tube and I confirmed he was male. He's talked Sphene's ear off all afternoon, when he wasn't busy eating, has gone through a bowl full of forage, chewed at everything in the cage and completely made himself at home - and yes, he's masturbated, lol. Sphene seems pretty taken with him too. He will never replace the ones degu piling over the rainbow bridge, and they will never be forgotten. Had i known of his plight sooner, I would have offered him a home regardless, because no degu deserves to live as he was. The rescue centre now has my number if anymore cross their doorstep. So, here he is.... Mr Clint Eastwood, The Goo With No Name.

I couldn't, in all consciousness, leave two degus suffering in silence, regardless. I'm still numb, but Sphene has a little spring in her step at the moment. And I'll take things slowly.
Clint is settling in slowly, but there is evidence that he has had an abused past. He hunkers down when I approach, but talks nicely to me, almost as if he's trying to pacify me. I suspect that 267g is a low weight for him as from above when he's walking, I can see a definite waistline; today he's much rounder though.
The weird gait looks like its coming from his back feet. He sits with them off the floor and I've had as closer look as I can, and it looks like he has a lot of pads missing, his front paws also have thickened fingers. Could he have been kept on wire at some point and had bumblefoot?

After 3 full days, mainly with his face firmly in the trough, he has now lost his waistline and looks decidedly more degu shaped.
He's also a gentleman when it comes to treats and takes them nicely. But... he still walks around talking to himself and has learned not to take a flying leap from the roof of your hut into the sand bath as you end up doing handstands with your bum hanging over the far edge, lol.
