OK, so the girls arrived yesterday.
They are more active today and have wasted no time in showing me whose the boss of this clan. Sphene is first to eat, first to drink and keeps the other two in check. She's the only one I can identify by sight, lol.
Bouncy has a video of them, but their cage looks a little bare as the new stuff from ratrations is arriving later today.

So they have spent today exploring a little more. According to the paperwork they are 1year 8months old which makes them younger than I first thought, but at least they should be through adolescence.
There's been some low level squeaks and humping which I'd expect as it's a new territory, and they soon discovered that trying to hump your mate when she's running full pelt on a wheel really isn't a great idea. Result: you both fall off! Lol.

Hahaha! They didn't look like they'd worked out the old wheel sharing thing yet!

That was so much fun to watch!! I was thinking that you may need to get another wheel. LOL!

I'll pick another wheel up as soon as I can. Reggie has taken on the role of mother hen, I love the way she zoomed up to the next level to see what was going on when one of them squeaked.

So exciting and fun Are they quite a bit smaller than Reggie? I was thinking they were less than one year old when I saw the difference.

Their weights are 233g, 240g and 258g so they are smaller than Reggie who tops the scales at over 280g. But I'm sure they still have time to grow a bit more. They adore the food I'm giving them so they have really good appetites.
They've been with the rspca since Sept 2020 and I think they said they came from a local college so this is the first family home they've been in. They seem to be adjusting well and Reggie will help them I'm sure.

They are definitely more confident today and have taken to degu piling in the open as opposed to hiding in corners and huts.
Progress has been somewhat hampered by Reggie coming on heat, lol, so she's been chasing them all over the place, squeaking furiously to get their attention. Mostly they ignored her.
I think they may have had to share a food pile, which is why the hierarchy took first feeding rights, but I've been putting 3 piles in, and today there was a degu on each pile and it was a bit calmer. They were eager to get their paws on their breakfast even though there was plenty in.
They do have a lot to learn, they don't chew anything in the cage, nor can they build a nest; I'm not sure they've seen toilet paper before so I've tasked Reggie with teaching them and there's been a few tentative nibbles on one of the ramps.
Tomorrow I have to clean Reggie's cage so if they're watching they'll see what fun toilet paper can be.

Lol! Don't worry, Silly can't do nests for toffee, and he's getting on for eight. I wonder how they're taking to Reggie's interference - are they learning eagerly, grudgingly observing and taking stuff onboard, or just wondering who the crazy lady is next door, and whether she's in the local mental institution! It's great they're settling in

You need a sign that says, Beware of Degus!

I have one!
Perhaps they were complaining about their ability to hide from the outside world being removed. They would usually learn the upside of better sunbathing, but it's been raining too much lol

Its been a bit of a fraught week. Reggie was on heat last week, this week it was the turn of two of the new arrivals (one straight after the other) so its been a bit noisy, and very hormonal in both cages.
The smaller of the trio, Amber, I think, has spotted Reggie and now follows her when she's near the bars, Reggie for the most part says 'hello' and then just gets on with what she was doing.
They now know when its feeding or treat time and wait at a distance, but not quite running very far away. Three piles of grub have settled any arguments over food as they have figured out that if they are shooed away from one, there is always a free one nearby, even though they are willing to share their pile with their cage mates.
I have worked out which one is Sphene, but the only distinguishing feature between Amber and Ruby is a white spot on the nose and its very hard to get a look at the face when you only see a fluffy backside retreating at 40mph, lol.

She's a bit of a rocket then! Worst case, it sounds like there's potential for Amber and Reggie? They always say that females in the same household end up with synchronised cycles. I wonder if it's the same way with goos

I sort of hope it is, but the thought of 4 degus on heat at the same time may mean me distributing earplugs to my neighbours, lol.
