It was horrible so so shocking and very bad the vet called me telling me that his heart rate had dropped and he stopped breathing he basically died but the vet bought him back to life by giving him compressions he then told me that when he managed to get him breathing again he thought he might have broke his ribs I nearly passed out I was so shocked he did that I said you should have just let him go instead of putting him through that i felt so horrible and guilty and said to the vet that i didn’t want him to suffer he should have let him go he had to stay in most of the day so they could keep an eye on his breathing I felt horrible the poor little boy he has been through so much and he is a old boy I felt awful so I picked him up from the vets they told me to continue the pain relief and bring him back today for a check up to see how he is so anyway I bought him home and cuddled him being very careful how I held him I thought yesterday that he would have passed and that if not I will be taking him back to the vets to put him to sleep well nope he is so tough I don’t know how he does it he started eating the sloppy food I gave him he even got up and went to his wheel I was shocked I gave him water out of syringe but he later started drinking from his water bottle he loves his snuggle safe heat pad so much that has really helped him recover so much I have made sure he has stayed warm on that and has eaten he did sleep a lot but I wanted him to so he recovers and isn’t in shock well update today he seems ok gave him his pain relief he has been eating a lot more not hard food though I make him his nuggets soft in a ball with porridge oats mixed in and he seems happy running on his wheel lots it’s really weird as I thought he would have not been able to move but he seems ok the vet did say that he couldn’t have done an Ex-Ray on him to see if his ribs was broke as he had to bring him around quick he told me he heard a crunch when he did the compressions I would rather have not been told that but to be honest I’m shocked by his recovery so hopefully he isn’t suffering in pain so I felt horrible yesterday today seems ok who knows tomorrow hopefully things get better

ZO!! NO!! What a horrible day!! Oh my goodness!! I'm absolutely cringing and I expect that you do every time you think of it! I just can't . . . or maybe more accurately, I don't want to . . . imagine.
SO . . . did they do a dental in there before all the really shocking events?

I know it is cringe I try not to think about it well today he seems like that never happened he is running and jumping on top of his house and playing on his wheel he says nothing bothers me lol I’m shocked really well the vet said he did have two spurs in the back of his mouth and managed to do his front top teeth and trim his spurs I think I’m not quite sure as he said he didn’t manage to do his bottom front teeth although they look to me like they have been done I will call the vet today to ask as he wants to know how he is doing scar is still not eating though he can’t eat his nuggets still or even a pumpkin seed so I’m still giving him soft food for now maybe his mouth might be saw I’m not sure these goos are very hard work it’s trial in error of what’s best for them

OMG how awful for you and Scar, I'm lightheaded just reading it! I'm not sure the vet needed to go into such detail, but I suppose at least you finally got some detail on the dental work they did and know that it did need doing.
Hopefully, the range of foods he will/ can eat will improve over the next few days as he gets used to how his mouth now feels.
If Scar is still doing well today, I would phone the vet to update him rather than taking Scar in again, unless the vet insists.

It was awful but we are both fine now yes the vet did go into detail I think it scared the vet very much and me and scar doing that I think it’s put him off now he won’t do that again yes I’m not taking him in the vets again I wouldn’t want to stress him out I’m waiting for the vet to call me today scar is so tame he still tries to jump out at me wanting me to hold him you would think he would run a mile but he really doesn’t seem to care bless him I have been giving him vitamin d drops every other day or every two days to try and get it into him to slow his teeth down as I’m dreading having to do that again I really wish he would wear them down his self but he doesn’t anymore that’s the sad thing

So update on the little fella he is running around playing on his wheel seems happy although he isn’t eating he tries to eat his nuggets but then drops them he also is not eating anything I offer him don’t know what he wants spoke to the vet he said he had four spurs on the right side of his mouth that’s where his lump is on that side the left was fine and they hadn’t cut his mouth which is good news the vet said he managed to file them down and his top front teeth he just didn’t have time to do the bottom front but I think they look ok so that was very lucky I knew he needed them doing you definitely no your pet and how they are I just wish now he will eat again and put more weight on

Did the vet give you any pain relief? The procedure is hard on the muscles and the joint of the jaw, as they stretch the mouth open to be able to get in there to do it. He would be much helped with some Metacam, which will also help with any inflammation. Make sure you do NOT, DO NOT, get MEAT flavoured . . . I don't remember what the other flavours are, but I think one might be banana?? SOMEONE help, cause I know there are several that know. Anyway, it will help him a LOT! Unless you already have some in your home from previous issues?

Yes thanks deguconvert he has metacam pain relief he has that twice a day he was already on it before too for his teeth and stuff and the vet gave me some more for him I think that’s why he seems happy at the moment and it’s not the meat flavoured one thanks for telling me that I didn’t realise you can get meat flavoured one he loves it just drinks it off the syringe yes I’m thinking his mouth might be sore still and must feel different too have you had any problems with any of yours with teeth problems

I don't have degus anymore. We had a family health crisis a few years back, which involved lung cancer and treatments, and we had to rehome the degus in order to remove all the extras that might put into the household air. We've not got anymore since then. Hubby isn't overly fond of them after 8 years of having them. (Not that he did any of the work. ) None of our crew had dental issues, for which I am very thankful! HOWEVER, I've been on this forum for a long while now, and have seen a lot of dental reports on here and I know that the pain they feel following dental treatments is enough to put them off food for several days in some cases. That is a really dangerous situation, that needs to be avoided. Pain relief and a shameless use of favorite treats to tempt them to eat tends to be needed during this time.

Sorry to hear about your family health problems deguconvert that’s a shame yes I don’t think my hubby would be keen to have anymore as much as they are so cute they are extremely hard work for small animals well scar isn’t doing to good at all today he has been in his bed all day not really come out I’ve only just gave him his pain relief as he hasn’t been out hardly at all today he isn’t really eating neither completely gone off eating and I gave him two syringe full of water because I wasn’t sure if he has had a drink neither so he isn’t having a good day at all today I also noticed a bit of gunk in his eye too

I'm so sorry, Zo!! Sorry I am late in reading this . . . we had some huge storms yesterday and lost power for several hours. First time in 30 years that a power outage has lasted that long. We have been blessed indeed! Anyway, that prevented me from being on . . . anything. LOL! How is he doing today?

Sorry I haven't been following the topic too closely, it's been hectic here and I haven't had a lot of time for things. But it sounds really tough right now. How is he right now? Has his eating improved at all?
If there's a risk that he has a broken rib (like there does seem to be), be very careful when handling him, and preferrably do not allow him to run around a lot or jump around. Broken ribs will heal, but there is always a risk that if jostled or disturbed, a broken rib could cause further damage. So if he does seem like he's ok, be careful with him for now, and observe for any cahnges in his general demeanor and health.
I'm hoping things will take a turn for the better!

Thanks both for your reply’s he seems a bit better today and definitely needs his pain relief I noticed a big difference after he had that I’m just really worried about him eating I have to syringe feed him as he isn’t eating food at all he does try too but can’t he drops it again as for syringe feeding him he just takes it willing from the syringe I don’t have to force feed him which is a relief as that’s not nice also when he eats it’s like he can’t swallow or he does a wide like sort of chocking thing like he struggles with it sometimes so I don’t know why that’s happening with him I really don’t know what’s going on with his mouth and wonder will he be able to eat again or is that him done now I know i might have to make that horrible decision If he can’t eat still after a while as I’m thinking of his quality of life and don’t want him to suffer he has been through a lot

Gosh, I'm sorry Zo, I was hoping he was just in temporary discomfort after the dental. Does he seem to open and close his mouth OK? I think possible scenarios would be damage to the jaw due the physical strain on the jaw from the dental, or that the heights of the teeth aren't correct to allow them to all meet properly to allow chewing. I don't have any ideas on the swallowing issue. I know it doesn't really help you to guess what the cause is if he can't eat for himself and there isn't much more you can do for him.

I'm so sorry that he isn't yet eating on his own. Keep up with what you are doing, because what you are doing is great! Lets just watch and see if it is simply a matter of time for further recovery, and when he is able he will pick up with eating under his own steam.

Hi Zo, I'm sorry things have got worse again so soon. It's obviously very personal, but with his health turning for the worse again so rapidly and him having multiple symptoms and him only having a dental very recently, it's difficult to think that there is much more that can be done for him. If the lump on the jaw is due to an overgrown root there is very little that can be done once it becomes infected. I'm sorry.

I'm really sorry to hear this, Zo! Can you take a photo of the lump and show it to us? It is possible that it is related to roots that may have become infected for some reason? Or it might be something completely unrelated to teeth. Anyway, if you can post a photo, we might be able to offer thoughts.
