Thought I should start a new topic about the rescue goos! After two days, two of them (Tom & Q) have both taken seeds from my hands through the cage bars. All three are comfortable coming out when I'm in the room, especially if I've turned the lights off for bed time. Honestly don't know how Ollie is doing, since I barely have a chance to see him before he runs for cover. Tom seems to absolutely love their wheel--though they can't figure out how to share! I've given them a high calcium oil seed mix, but I'm not sure if they're eating it or not. I try not to disturb them too much. I do feel bad for my housemates though, since I'm always humming or singing now, just so the goos can know where I am. Physically: Tom- half of right ear missing, cataract in right eye. His tail is also degloved. His teeth look pretty yellow, which is good. Q- tail also degloved. I believe he just has a cataract in his right eye, but the left looks slightly odd. I'll try to get a picture. Ollie- full tail! Though its sparse. Cataracts in both eyes? Unclear, as he's definitely the most skittish. I've attached a pic of Tom sitting on the wheel trying to get more seeds! Cute little guy

The fact that two of them have degloved tails makes me wonder if the owner that abandoned them was accustomed to grabbing them by their tails. Maybe by the time the second one degloved, they learned that they were causing the injury? It is interesting that all three show signs of cataracts, and I wonder if they are brought on by the food they were being given in their original home. Have you read through the thread about cataracts? I'll include it here for you deguworld.proboards.com/thread/9481/different-types-cataracts just incase you haven't seen it. It might prove helpful? Since there are cataracts that indicate diabetes, and cataracts that are genetic, those from age alone, and then cataracts that are the result of diet and are called osmotic, there are a few reasons why we might see them developing in our degus.

Hmmm, I wonder if you're right. From the description I was given, the goos were lucky to survive their first home. I actually read that the first night I got them I'm really hoping they aren't from diabetes. I haven't heard extra water drinking, but it's only been a few days.

Probably worth trying them on a low carb high forage diet, but I'm not sure how you might achieve that in the States. Is there any opportunity for you to collect your own forage?

I don't really have the opportunity to collect my own forage here, unfortunately. I do order dried from Canada. The best I have is an herb garden.

You can order dried forage plants/herbs on Amazon. You just have to order each item separately--dried strawberry leaves, dried dandelion, etc. Just try looking things up, you can find almost everything nowadays.

Tom looks like a right character, and so happy!
I suspect Ollie just needs some time, and it's his razor sharp reactions that have helped him keep his tail!

Good point, Winic1! I buy their seeds there, not sure why that didn't occur to me. He really is, Bouncy Now I'm questioning whether tails are sparse or degloved actually. The two with what I thought were degloved tails have white tips at the end, but I almost think they have their full tails. I'll try to get a pic. I'm having a harder time telling the difference between I called Ollie and Q. Hopefully I'll be able to get a good pic of identifying features in the next few days. Here's a pic of all three this morning Tom still looks like hes grinning!

Tom and Q (star trek or bond?) are so adorable! Maybe one day we'll get to meet the elusive Ollie

Tom and Q (star trek or bond?) are so adorable! Maybe one day we'll get to meet the elusive Ollie Haha, neither actually! I'm sticking true to my Harry Potter theme. Tom (the barman from the Leaky Cauldron), Q (as in Florean Fortescue's ice cream), and Ollie (Olivander the wandmaker). Ollie is actually hiding the back right corner of the picture! One day we can hope

Ah! Spotted him! He's eyeing you up, whilst his brothers lull you into a false sense of security. In reality, he's plotting the next stage of infiltration whilst the cannon fodder does its job and they have control of your household..................Then the WORLD!

Updates:
Fairly sure about this now.
Tom- cataract right eye Q- no cataracts??? Ollie- cataracts both eyes
So Ollie is the first rescue I've actually touched! Poor babe fell right into my hands when I was taking out their wheel. Was probably scared half to death. I'm glad I caught him though. It's a several foot fall to the ground from their cage!

And you've had contact with the elusive Ollie!

Did he freeze? Try to jump out of your hands? No biting I hope. Did you have treats on hand to give him? LOL! Not likely, I expect . . . that kind of opportunity would have been completely unexpected! AND he mightn't have been capable of taking a treat if he was very frightened.

He completely froze. He fell head first into my hands, I had time to think "and this is where I get bitten," and then I had him back in the cage. I don't think he would have been able to take a treat.
And this morning, while putting in the wheel, the ever happy Tom took a dive for the floor. I think they're telling me I need to get a barrier...

Probably the cataracts mean they can't tell where the edge of the cage and the drop are. Congrats on the new additions by the way I hope they settle in and learn their way around soon! Did someone already mention about talking to them lots to help them get used to you since their vision isn't great?

Thanks Molette! They've already settled in quite a lot, which makes me very happy. Yep, I think it was ntg who mentioned it on the adoption page. I'm constantly singing or humming when I'm in there. Tom can already recognize the "you're going to get a treat!" tone. So poor Ollie has a new hiding place. If he can't see me, I can't see him, right?

ROFL!!! Reminds me of my kids hiding behind their hands and believing they were completely invisible as a result.
