*this is your subconscious speaking...............Tom, Ollie, and Q are your own permanent degus.........they are not available for adoption.........* Hahaha, I had a dream about this last night! I honestly don't know if people will be willing to look past the cataracts to adopt them...which only works in my favor Does anyone have suggestions for bonding with an essentially blind goo (Ollie)? Hes gotten good with having me nearby, but any movement (i.e. to give seeds) scares him.

How about just putting the seeds etc on somewhere like your lap or on your hand, so he can climb onto you to help himself without you moving? Try keeping a fleece or something that you can wear only with the goos, so he gets used to your scent too. Before you know it, he'll be looking for you!

I mean, cataracts have never put me off so you may just be making excuses not to rehome them

Oh, good idea, Bouncy! I already wear the same pants when I'm with the goos (Fred likes to pee on me...) so I can definitely try your suggestions.
Shhhhh, ntg! I have to at least look like I'm trying or my landlord will be mad at me!

But it's Christmas, no one rehomes pets this time of year, lol.

Put the cages close enough and you can pretend they're seeing the same goos over and over again

You guys shouldn't encourage me, Savvy and ntg! Not gonna lie, my friends must now think I'm the crazy goo lady. But I love them all On a total side note, I really really hate hormone season. The mauraders won't stop going at each other during play time. Which makes it very difficult to clean their cage :/

BIG NEWS! Ollie let me feed him seeds! Several times! And barely squeaked! I'm so proud of him

See, now, you can't get these poor, mistreated fluffs to trust you, then just break that trust by adopting them out to someone else. Think of the psychological damage you could do to them by emphasising their feelings of abandonment

Maybe always talk softly before moving your hand near him, saying the same thing, so that he will know when you're moving and won't be freaked out by it.
You know, it really would be a shame to rehome them after building such a bond of trust with them. Perhaps they came to you so that you could keep them but use them as ambassadors to promote adoption of other degus, showing how even degus from a poor start, degus with cataracts, can become loving, trusting pets. yeah, that's it, you have to keep them to help other degus get adopted.

Hahaha, you guys aren't helping at all! But I wouldn't want to put poor (already blind) degus through even more hardship! My landlord (who is a great friend, and actually lives in the house) has honestly been wonderful about the whole thing. I just try not to mention them, maybe she'll forget

So I feel like horrible goo mom! Tom and Q were out for playtime and I had their cage open, giving Ollie treats. I'm not sure if I startled him somehow or if he really wanted treats, but he ran straight into my arms! He freaked out and jumped to the ground. Hes running around and seems fine, but I feel bad for dropping him. On a positive note, playtime with all three has been excellent. Once Tom and Q realized they could jump on my legs, I've been an obstacle course that offers treats! Ollie seems to enjoy wandering such a big space as well. I wonder if this is one of their first times out. I've attached a pic Tom trying to eat my sweatshirt strings! Attachments:

LOVE that photo!! Sounds like you are all having a great time!! I think Ollie is OK, so don't keep reprimanding yourself. Some things are hard to avoid simply because they were unpredictable and accidental. AND if you keep having these kinds of outings with them, he will soon be learning to run over top and demand treats as well!

I love that photo!
There's a lovely feeling when you become a part of the furniture. Part of you feels a bit annoyed that they still run when you try to touch them but, when you realise you've become a security perch or haven, all that melts away.

Thanks Deguconvert, I appreciate that! I just feel bad letting an animal potentially get hurt on my watch. But so true, they definitely are unpredictable and have their own minds And thank you as well Bouncy! I love love being part of the furniture. And then when they start demanding things of you (like being an elevator, or excuse me, why did you hide that treat?) It feels even better. The first time Fred gripped my finger made my heart melt. Tom and Q being so happy climbing all over me did as well!
