I want to reach through the bars and tickle that bum!! You would not believe how much self control I had to exercise to not do that!

Cataract related question--
From a distance, Q doesn't have cataracts. However, when I get close, it looks like he has very very faint cataracts. They aren't nearly as white and opaque. Are these the start of cataracts?

A cataract is not so much a thing of its own, but that the lens of the eye, which is normally clear like an eyeglass lens, accumulates deposits of proteins and/or pigments inside, making it appear foggy or opaque. So, just like having fogged or very dusty, dirty glasses, you can't see clearly.
So getting cataracts is something that develops over time, as you go from being a little bit clouded to being completely clouded or 'fogged in'. Vision becomes dimmer, fuzzy, less clear, and finally more like looking through waxed paper.
so, yes, it is possible that you are seeing the very beginning of cataracts, where just a little bit of this clouding has started.
If these goos' cataracts have been caused by poor diet, they might slow their development with improved nutrition and care.

Awesome, thank Winic! I'll very much hope that I can slow down the progression of these cataracts. At least they seem to not let the cataracts stop them from getting into mischief

Well, the one in the wheel on the left definitely has all of his tail!
They're right little characters, very addictive, and may well take advantage of their cataracts.
"no mum, wasn't me! I can't possibly see to do something like that."
"no, I didn't do it, and what are you talking about, I can't even see where you're pointing to!"

Oh Bouncy, they very much are characters! I'm so happy that they're willing to show so much personality when they've had such a hard life. Haha, I can hear that conversation now! I'll probably let them get away with it too Previous photo, from left to right: Q, Tom, and Ollie. I think they've just lost hair on the end of their tails (not sure if overgrooming or poor diet though).

You can periodically see white/bare tips on all of mine at some point, I just take it as the direction of their fur at a particular time

Stress, boredom, degu hijinks, any of that can make them nibble on their own or someone else's tail hairs. Ours would periodically get chewed short, but it grows back out in time.

Good to know, all! I'll just continue keeping a watch on them. All of the goos Right to left: Tom, Ollie, Q. I feel like Ollie looks slightly angry I took his pic!

LOL! At least he conceded to be present while you were so near! I think you are making great progress!

Thanks, Deguconvert! I really do feel like I've gotten far with all of them. Tom stepped on to my hand for treats today I appear to have a couple of nest builders! I gave them toilet paper--so funny to see Tom arrange things just so, only for Q to come by and remodel!

I don't think he's angry, just confused about what's happening! Let's face it, they're in an unusual emotional position at the moment, can't see properly, and no one has ever tried to snap them before!

Very true Bouncy! I'm just glad he was willing to keeping standing there with me so nearby. This is an amazing improvement in just over a week.

GUYS! Tom crawled in my hand! And sat there! Q even let me stroke him for a bit! Even better, Ollie didn't squeak in fright at all during this!

Wow! Makes you wonder how they would have been if they'd had the right start. Please say you're going to keep them, they're responding so well to you!

It really does! They're honestly such sweethearts. I really really shouldn't, Bouncy. I will admit I'm not looking as hard as I should for their new forever home though Tom and Q both had playtime today! Seemed perfectly content to explore and mark everything within range! Q is around 240, same as Fred. Tom is a bit lighter, around 204. That's definitely lighter than the Mauraders (who I'm assuming are around the same age). They look healthy though, so I wont worry too much!
