Quite so, maybe all the problems on this site could be fixed if goos would actually drink Guinness and relax a little more 😍😜 xxx

Time to crack open the booze, boys are apart again! To date, an evening apart to have a chat with themselves has been enough to sort them out.
No stepdaughter in sight and no obvious external factor.
Fairly certain now that it all happens when Larry gets a bit frisky and Barry really just wants to be left alone. Which is I'm sure is quite understandable to really not want to be humped by a randy sibling. Barry seems delighted at the space in these circumstances and Larry runs about for a while like he is remaking scenes from the shining.
These boys drive me nuts! Xxx

Aw, I'm so sorry, Kikgoos! How frustrating! However, at just over 12 months of age, they could also be feeling the effects of hormones . . . if the events are any indication, that is definitely what is going on. This is a difficult time alright! Take a deep breath and be prepared to keep them apart for more than a night. Maybe try two or even three nights if you feel the fighting is serious enough and then reintroduce. Keep the cages beside each other. Are there injuries?

No not yet, never been apart long enough for us to dismantle to cage (its the explorer and we just block off the middle).
They always exhibit the same behaviour that I know will lead to injury so jyst got there in time. Larry bangs his tail and harrasses Barry whilst Barry until Barry makes ridiculously loud straggled squeaks and runs off. Larry chases till Barry turns and they start to lock into a circle of noise and fluff.
I'll try the usual tomorrow (run up around cage) if no fighting, leave cage doors open for a few hours and they tend to go to sleep together. If not I'll think about seperating cages.
Ho hum. They are so lovely most of the time, hormones a bugger for us all :-) xxx

It sounds like you have a good handle on it and are dealing with it with some confidance and good humour, which is a really good thing!

Thanks lovely. Do you know as stupid as it sounds, I literally balled my little eyes out the first time it happened.
There's such a feeling of being helpless and you worry when you go out and leave them, worry that they won't resolve it and that they're not happy etc. But I think the more it happens, I'm resigned to the fact they seem content MOST of the time, that it hopefully is never a permanent split and although this Degu ownership gig is definitely not for the faint hearted, I am getting used to their rather stressful and dysfunctional ways 😁 xxx

ROFL!! You have fully graduated into the strength of mind and heart needed for degu ownership! Well said above.

Haha feel like I've gone through some weird goo initiation process, concluding in my internal dialogue mainly saying "I love you, but you're A$$h*les" 😂 xxx
