Haha I'm so happy there are others who understand the strange magical hold these furballs have over us! Tried another meet today as hubby built a big pen out of mdf (they previously had the run over a very large 3ft x 2ft bathroom but by the time I'd goo proofed it and cleaned up after each night it was too time consuming. Larry was very foot stompy and tail bangy to begin but by the end, Barry so very nearly let him mount him, then it reversed, Barry snapped back and tried to be the mounty one. I wish they could decide who is boss! Xxx

I so hear you!! Even if they could decide in say a week or two . . . but no . . . it takes longer and is lots of back and forth. Sometimes I wonder if they just live to play with each others minds at this age. "I'm just going to make it look like I accept his/her dominance and then I'll give'em a surprise reversal! See how they like that!!"

It sounds like a fun game and all but it's so sad, cages still one on top of other at the mo so they can't see each other, BUT they both go to sleep at exactly the same times if only they were in a pile together. xxx

Thanks guys, support appreciated, I'll keep you posted on their progress! As they are just a year old, is this around the time hormones are there craziest or is it ongoing? Things would have to get an awful lot worse to ever consider neutering but I just wondered if these things have a peak time so I know if its gone way beyond the norm . Xxx

That last meeting sounds really positive! It sounds like things are settling down. I wonder if it really was your niece that freaked them out. They run around in a different way, make different sounds, have different behaviours. I know one member had problems when one of their neighbours got a puppy.
Obviously, even when they're back together, you'll still see that kind of behaviour now and then (one of my younger ones sometimes looks like he's in a wheelbarrow race, but left his partner behind!), but you won't be jumping out of your skin each time.

The raging hormonal time for degus seems to span from 5-6 months age all the way up to 18 months age. It is a long time. Most will not have trouble the WHOLE time, but many will take several months, and some the whole year and a little beyond!! There are the rare few that go right up to age 2 years. After that they generally calm down considerably, but that doesn't mean they are not capable of having a fallout with each other. Nor that they will not form a grudge which can result in the need for separation if the grudge is big enough. Temperamental much? YES! LOL! However, for the most part, they do get along very well and form wonderful bonds that are lovely!!

And Dixie does like to hold a grudge.

I'm looking forward to that time!
Tonight started with the usual Larry trying to mount Barry and Barry having none of it. THEN Barry actually mounts Larry, he wasn't delighted about it and started teeth grinding, tail banging etc and spent the rest of the time trying and failing again to mount Barry. Who the hell is winning!!! xxx

I probably should have said ladies and gents hehe, no idea who be a lady or a gent. Thanks lovely. I so hope it lasts. My pen is big enough to enclose the cage so I cleaned it out earlier and left the doors open, bit by bit they explored together and settled down. I have ordered one of those clever dog cams too, just to ease my nerves when I'm out the house xxx

That's excellent! Who could know small female relatives could cause so much disruption!!
Great move on the goo cam - I set one up last year (normal IP cam that's mounted to my kitchen ceiling) and love checking up on them. It's when you turn the mic on and call them. They stop, come to the bars to say hi, but get confused because they can't see you!
