I think, for degus at least, opuntia or prickly pear cactus is a potential food source for them. I know they enjoy the flowers but I'm guessing food-wise they'd be more likely to go for less spikey succulents of some kind?

randomname 1. Don't buy the dried cholla cactus. I thought it was a good idea, and thought it was harvested in an environmentally safe way. Turns out it isn't. It's messing with the eco system even when it's collected legally. So don't buy it - even though they love them. 2. Yes, they do eat some forms of cacti. Apparently wild chinchillas prefer dried forage. One cactus they actually eat the plants from. If you want to look at the plants they eat in the wild, check out Save the Wild Chinchillas facebook page. They upload a lot of images of native species chinchillas forage on, and a lot of cool videos of wild chinchillas (and the occasionally wild degu) I'm not feeding a lot of fresh this year. Theres so much going on I haven't got the mental surplus to do it. @ntg opuntia isn't native to south america

Thanks for the heads up Darth. I don't like the idea of hurting other animals to feed my own, seems kinda crazy.

Trying to insert at picture of the dandelion roots I just dug up and cleand. Now I'm going to dry them. They go crazy for their dried roots but for some reason doen't like them fresh at all. They might be too bitter for them to eat.

No idea what is up with the image display, I can't see a reason why it's not working.
Those roots are massive!

I know what went wrong moletteuk it's because I tried to use the [ img ] with a direct link/url instead of a .jpg/picture link. I'm using imgur and it's a bit of a hassel figuring out how to share it correctly. And you are right, a few of them are quite massive. I ave up hope on my edible garden last year. I want to use it this year, so thought why not dig up the dandelions and use the roots for the chinnies. A part of the area is overgrown with garlic mustard. It's such a lovely plant so I'm just letting them grow there and left the large dandelions growning next to them in this specific area. Garlic mustard houses the orange-tip butterfly, so I'm hoping we might see some of them if I just leave it be
