I know sunflower petals are safe. I have a mix of blossoms specifically made for chins & degus. One of the ingredients is sunflower petals. My guys like them, but not as much as roses. That is my one contribution to the discussion as I have so little knowledge, but I'm super excited I can join in lol

About the stone fruit trees there might not actually be a problem with them. There is a problem with the stones in the fruits. More and more feed their rodents on stone fruit trees. Problem is there's not really any hard evidence either way.

I've always fed stone fruit wood and leaves because we have a cherry tree. I just mean that we can't say for sure that there isn't any problem at all if it is fed unlimited, so I think it should go in the category below 'completely safe', which to be fair, most plants would fall in.

Agree moletteuk. The reason I started looking into fresh is because I do not believe in a pellet being the best way of feeding. Variation must be the key in my world. Too much of a anything is not good

Yeah, the German lists were alphabetical, but translation always shifts the order. I'm sure you can't tell which lists I went from a-z and vice versa. Hands are really sore, so I'll finish off fruits tomorrow, then start on the remaining lists and other guides on the page

Oh, and with the branches list, it is specifically looking at the woods. Those that are Selective generally look to me like the ones that have things like poisonous berries, like rowan.

A couple of days ago I tried feeding a leaf of oxalis for them, as I harvested the roots. They really liked them, and no sign of sick animals. So nct year I'm planning on adding them to the diet in small amounts

I have a garden variety of oxalis, not sure what state it is currently in, I didn't know the roots were edible, I'll have to have a look.

The amount of information you have collated is amazing! Sorry I havnt been on here for a long time, I definitely have a lot of information to catch up on! Its a shame to see Polly has left the forum, I personally believe that variety is beneficial and am interested to explore safe ways of providing this to our chinchillas. darthchinchi, are all the plants pictured ones you feed to your chinchillas? And in answer to the insect feeding - I’ve noticed peanut chomping on a bug before !!! And bouncy do you know how much of the seeds chinchillas can safely eat?

natnat899 I'm not sure, but the goo recommendation for them it's a relatively small proportion. Everything in moderation! And welcome back!

Great to see you natnat899 @emdalliance is feeding her chins the same seed mix as her degus get, hopefully she can tell you how much she gives them. Emily and randomname are both feeding dried forage to their chins.

All the pictures are things I've been feeding. Can't remember if I ever uploaded my list of edibles for chinchillas...

As for seeds, throughout the dry season in the wild, seeds are a big part of their diet.

Emily and randomname are both feeding dried forage to their chins. Hiya! Not sure we have met? My two chins get exactly the same food as my degus. My rescue chin Paddy has had this diet since he was 11 weeks old. He eats like a pig. They get a teaspoon full each just like the degus every day (roughly, maybe a bit more). They also get unlimited dried forage... nothing is off limits. I give them more hay than I do the degus because the chins actually seem to eat it. Nuts and things like sunflower seeds as treats They’re both doing great on the diet! I do give them chinchilla nuggets too. Two brands - science selective being the one, I can’t remember the other.. I’ll tell you when I’m home. They definitely make the nuggets go down regularly, mainly the younger one Paddy. Whereas the degus may not touch their nuggets for days.

I've tried giving my boys a similar seed mix to the goos (omitted one or two seeds but can't remember which ones) but it hasn't proven to be very popular and they are very selective feeders with it. Consequently, I'm just giving them the seeds they do like as hand-fed treats to help with bonding and in moderation as they just so happen to be the bad ones for calcium:phosphorus. Dried forage, I'm like em, will feed them what I feed my degus (see the bought herb, leaf and flowers thread on the degu nutrition board) and they absolutely love it. They also enjoy fresh when I can get my hands on it but I'm having a slight snail problem this year and they're eating the seedlings I was growing for the rodents so I tend to get my parents to bring a bag of goodies up from their back garden (they have a lot of fruit trees and bushes, herb plants and other edibles like bamboo and birch). I give mine nuts in shells but so far neither of them have gotten through a shell, they're less tenacious and a lot less chew-obsessed than the goos!

darthchinchi that is interesting to know! I will definitely look into feeding seeds - do the german communities already do this? emily Jane! We havnt met before - it’s nice to meet you I find my chinchillas eat more hay as well (they love Timothy hay most of all), the degus don’t seem to touch it! I feed both the chins and degus a lot of dried mixed, but I do want to start feeding fresher foods to them - I’m hoping when we get our own house I can set up a little herb/foraging garden so I know exactly what I am picking!

darthchinchi that is interesting to know! I will definitely look into feeding seeds - do the german communities already do this? Yes! The German community feed seeds s and some have a preference for fresh feeding over dried where possible (both for tooth wear and water intake). They also aren't fans of grains in the diet. I find chinchilla scientia to be quite a useful base for info when starting to look at their care recommendations (google translate does most of the hard work).

One thing about the "german way" though. Ive noticed a tendency to give what ever they can have, fresh, and not looking at their natural diet. Personally Im not a fan of giving larger ammounts of fresh fruites and veggies due to the high sugar and water content. There is a lot of options much better suited for what they have evolved to (like giving carrot tops instead of carrots, or giving aple branches, leaves and flowers instead of apples)

If I feed fresh it's herbs or grasses (which they ignore anyway lol) I'm curious about cactus' though - do they eat it in the wild? I've seen dried cholla cactus for birds, wonder if the chinchillas would eat them. I do feed a little fresh spider plant to the degus & chins occasionally, but only the chins like it. Wish I had some bamboo.
