Although pricey, the Beaumont Animal hospital did a fantastic job with Tibbs. He recovered quickly after having an infected tooth removed and Spurs burred. I will carry on going here and seeing Joanne - she was very knowledgeable. Nadine is also excellent - very compassionate. I've just been updating the chart: savvy was Kings Road Vets that you tried in sunderland worth recommending?

Yes highly recommended.
I saw Wendy who is a rodent specialist, she had no problems handling them and really seemed to know her stuff, including castration. They only charge about £10.00 for a rodent health check which is really good, but prices may have increased since then.
Sorry I forgot to update the entry.

Other members who don't have a goo specialist nearby might find the free advice line invaluable! These are the people dealing with Scaredy and his gnashers

Think I've nearly got them all now.
@savvy don't worry, I saw you had come back and told us they were good a few posts after your original one, but I've added the name Wendy now, which is useful.

Highly recommend Jenna Richardson in the Rabbits and Exotics department of the Hospital for Small Animals (University of Edinburgh).
Handled the goos brilliantly, and had the work done within 24 hours of seeing them (also have a 24 hour emergency service). They do keep your degus in overnight post-anaesthetic to make sure they're eating well and their gut is working, and they keep your group together for no extra cost as it helps to aid recovery. I'm sure the other vets will be just as good, but I only have experience with Jenna.

*Update* Highly recommend Toll Barn vets - Heath Road, North Walsham, Norfolk NR28 0JB, Contact No:01692 407126. Faye Bethel who is also the Director of the practice, is great with Degus (believe she owns them herself), knowledgeable of their needs and very professional. She specialises in all animals including exotics, very caring and compassionate. Looking at around £120 for a full dental, the service and duty of care is worth it. *Edit* We've been back with Butters since and last two visits we've paid £90. Butters so far has strived. They removed two molars as she was constantly struggling, her incisors also were growing too much for her as it appears her molars were causing them to be misaligned. Faye came in on her day off especially to perform on Butters. She is now a picture of health and so far she has had no further problems. Considering the other vet I mention below was going to put her down, she's at an all time heaviest 200g+. Have not weighed her recently but she is almost as big as our other two who are around 220g.
We haven't had much experience with All Creatures other than a consultation at Brackenwood, Sandy Lane, Horsford, NR10 3FB - 01603 898984, but they also seemed very professional, competent and knowledgeable of Degus and exotics. The reason we did not continue treatment with them was they are expensive (quoted £220 for dental treatment).
AVOID Westover Vets, 40 Yarmouth Road, North Walsham NR28 9AT for degus. We were seen by William Nash who's handling of our degu was barbaric, performed poor dental treatment that we will need to have corrected elsewhere, did not bother treating infection despite being asked to do so, was not interested in after care treatment either, was only interested in putting our degu to sleep. Had we gone to our follow up appointment, he certainly would have done so. Was no cheaper than Tollbarn either. Will be seeking a refund and further advice from VCMS/RVNs on their code of practice.

Highly Recommended:
Companion Care Vets Kidderminster

Telephone: 01562 733460
Handled one of my degus brilliantly, managed to pick him up quickly without chasing him around and around the cage, with her bare hands, no burritoing needed. Weighed him swiftly and accurately.
He had neutering done by one of the vets there (I can't recall who unfortunately) I know however that she was inexperienced with degus, I never got to meet her as I saw another vet before the operation, but she did a grand job! Beautiful wounds, glued together. They knew to use gas rather than other forms of anaesthesia. She burred his front teeth for free and trimmed his overgrown claws for free too whilst he was under!
They gave me a post-op care sheet that was probably for rabbits, but it was pretty good, nothing was "wrong" on it. I was very impressed they did this - it was catered slightly to Kev too.
5-7 day checkup was with a veterinary nurse, who was brilliant! She was exotics trained. She scooped Kev up, held him belly up securely to check his wounds, didn't hold him long as to not stress him, checked him all over very calm and gently. She told me they'd all been fussing over him as he's adorable!
I asked the main vet Gavin, permission to add them to this list and he said he was more than happy.
If I had any questions like what they'd given him as pain relief, it was no bother for them when I rang and asked a fair few questions. They told me if I had any concerns to come in and chat.
Lovely vets. My family dogs go there too and they're brilliant with them, hence I was more trusting of a Companion Care despite hearing other stories about them and degus.
For neutering it was £65 all in, plus the free burring of front teeth and trimming of claws.
If he needed his front top teeth burring again it was £18.95, which included anaesthetic!

Highly recommend.
Kirsty at King's Road Vets, Sunderland. She was the vet who did Bumblebee's op. Very confident handling him, and seems to know her stuff.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Ark Vet's in Sheffield? www.arkvetsheffield.co.uk/ They did Alex's castration a few years ago (which went without any problems) and Dr Lara Hueston www.arkvetsheffield.co.uk/about-us/our-team treated Annie throughout the time she got the tumours. I can't recommend Dr Lara enough. Her experience and positivity really helped make the situation less stressful, and she seemed to genuinely care about Annie.

Does anyone have a vet recommendation for Glasgow please? I see a couple of Scotland options listed, but I don’t drive, so I’m hoping someone has had a good experience at one of the Glasgow exotic vets that are listed. One of my degus has gotten very thin but isn’t struggling with eating or hiding treats, so I’m really concerned about diabetes. I’m actually hating myself right now because I thought I’d made sure that there was no sugar in their diets, I don’t know what I’ve missed.
If anyone has any recommendations, I’d really appreciate it, otherwise I’ll start phoning vets tomorrow during opening hours and praying I get lucky lol. Thank you xx

Don't beat yourself up over diabetes, sometimes it genetic and there's just nothing you can do to stop it, no matter how careful you are with their diet.

Don't beat yourself up over diabetes, sometimes it genetic and there's just nothing you can do to stop it, no matter how careful you are with their diet. Thank you, I really hope it’s not diabetes, she doesn’t have cataracts that I can see, but regardless, she needs to be seen. This degu belongs to my youngest daughter who is very VERY sensitive. When her favourite rat died some years ago, she would sob over her even a few years later. Basically, if I had to choose a degu to get sick, hers would be last on that list (not that I’d ever choose a degu but I’m sure you know what I mean). There seem to be some promising exotic vets in the Glasgow area, so if no one has any recommendations, hopefully I’ll be able to add a Glasgow vet to this list soon. I need a vet for them anyways, now is as good a time as any. It’ll be comforting to know where we are going should they get sick in the future. I’m finding it super stressful not having a known vet that I can trust with these beasties.

I know exactly what you mean.
The restrictions aren't helping either. Whichever vet you decide to use, check if they have treated degus before. Even exotic vets might not have come across them before.

Would it be possible to do a telephone or video consultation with the Laurie Group Vets, I think they may be your nearest?
They may also be able to advise of help getting to and from the vets during lockdown. I know my local vets have employed a taxi driver as a pet ambulance for people who don't drive.

Even exotic vets might not have come across them before. God don’t I know it. My cat needs to be desexed and every where I’ve called has a 3 month waiting list. He was meant to be done at the end of March, but obviously that appointment was cancelled and I have been at a loss. He sprays and it’s miserable. I spend so much time crawling around sniffing walls, it’s pathetic and I look completely ridiculous 🙈
