Just finished my new cage Got a lot of help from my dad and built a cage out of an ikea wardrobe. The guys seem to love it already! I've had some trouble with them fighting over food during feeding time, so I made sure it would be possible to separate them on different levels when they get food and they seemed really happy with a quiet mealtime yesterday^^ The old wire cage was smaller and hell to clean, so this is definitely a huge improvement! And there's a lot of shelf room above the cage as well I'll get some more stuff for them to play with and climb on later This is a picture from before I put in bedding and all the toys and wood. This shows the awesome doors my dad made which are held closed with magnets. The wardrobe is 100x58x201cm, but I chose to use the top for storage and the bottom for the aquarium and a little more storage. (The straw, chinchilla sand and empty pringles can was in the aquarium from when I used it to keep them in while I cleaned the old cage and was swapped for sand later.) At the bottom there is an aquarium with sand for them to dig in and the bottom level is a drawer with a glass front that can be pulled out for easy cleaning. This was after the bedding, hay and toys were put in. The wheel is fastened to the wall so it won't slide all over the cage when they run, but can be easily removed for cleaning. Asbjørn (the daddy) is running in the wheel, Arno is on the roof and Ezio is peeking out from the house^^ I'm going to look for some battery powered led lights to have inside the cage to give them some more light, but I couldn't resist moving them in It was quite pricey to make, but if I had bought a cage of similar size I wouldn't have had any money left to feed them And when I see how happy they are, it was worth every penny

It is great!!! Well done!! I bet they don't want to come for visits much right now. Ours completely ignored us for weeks after going into their new cages.

I never did show off cage 2... They get get a bit more natural light than in the first cage, mainly due to placement. If I had the space to rearrange my lounge I would, so that Zoe and Nyota got some too, but the lookout box position wouldn't fit under the eaves and I need to talk to my friend about how doable it would be to rearrange the lookout. Anyway, this cage is almost exactly the same as the first one, except this one is lined with hardboard. It has made a difference to wall chewing, but River attacks anything and everything else, like the shelf edgings, the ventilation hole, the wheel... My friend is playing with a few ideas to make a metal wheel. i do love how each group has made the space their own though. Zoe and Nyota will sleep in their nest box, or in a pile on the ground floor near the wheel. Miho, Bea and River sleep at night in the lookout, which they have dragged every available nesting material into and made it their bed, and spend a lot of time just hanging about on the various structures

They come out to say hello every now and again, but they're definitely more happy to stay inside now And I just can't get over how quiet feeding time is now

Some great cages lately Can I just make a polite reminder that it's best to share photos using a hosting site like Photobucket otherwise I have to delete the photos after a few months because we have so little storage space on the forum, and then useful threads like this one fill with blank spaces. Instructions are in photo area of forum, basically you upload to host site and then just copy and past the IMG tags into your post here (if you use the full reply function you can see what you are doing). Thank you.

Hi all, I'm new here but thought i'd post some photos of my degu cages. These are my two enclosures housing a pair of sisters in each. Both enclosures are 120cm long, 60cm deep and 106cm high. The three levels provide a CARA of 21,600 sq cm. The bottom and middle levels are 30cm high while the top levels are 40cm high allowing for 35cm diameter wheels. Hope you all like them A walk through of how I built them can be found here. These photos are about 9 months old now, I've got an up to date video here:

Those cages are fantastic, so perfect for the degus and they look so smart in your room Are the wheels 3" deep aluminium cake tins (35cm diam)? What bearings did you use? Love the blog too (more info on building the cages there) Welcome to the forum!

Thank you!! The wheels are 4" (11cm) deep, so enough for one degu to run but they can't run together which is a shame but i couldn't find any deeper (that were reasonably priced). They love to run together on their saucers though. I used a skate wheel from a pair of kids inline skates i bought on eBay for £10 haha, not very professional but you can't see it

The wheel sounds good, I only saw 3" aluminium tins when I made my wheel, do you know where you got the 4" one from?
