Or just a whole loo roll!
I agree, it looks fab, and what great planning!
Ditto covering the lights - degus just don't understand electricity. They'll chew away until it goes dark, then complain to you about the darkness like it's your fault. Unless the wooden fronts to each level are easily replaceable, I would also advise a little metal stripping, or they won't last any time at all, especially when they learn it's their escape route.........

ibb.co/vhW8phyHere is the updated version now that my 2 girls have moved in. They haven't started doing much nesting yet, how long does that take for them to feel comfortable? I added the mesh on the top lights and threw a bunch of tp and tissue in there with them.

That looks AWESOME! It can take a while . . . but once they do, they'll just rearrange it all for you. LOL! When I moved my boys out of the wire cage they had been in, and into the wood home build, they were really quiet for several days. In fact, for the first two weeks they were so silent! Then all of a sudden it was like they realized they owned it, and the noises increased, calling, chasing, telling each other off, warbling, nesting, moving the nest to a different level, dismantling things I thought looked great and they apparently disagreed . . . they got busy. LOL! You'll see it eventually. Unless your girls are really polite and well mannered.

Not a cage, just some quilted bed cubes I made my lot for Christmas! It's denim on the outside, two layers of wadding, and fleece on the inside, and it's the ONLY thing I've ever put in the cage for either group (except food) that has been used and accepted instantly! Quite chuffed!

Ooh that looks COSY! I love a bit of pressure cooking too It's excellent the stuff that inevitably bubbles over, like rice. Also great for casseroles!

This is one of our enclosures. I'll post a picture of the other one soon.
This enclosure can be used as one six level enclosure or separated into two three level enclosures.
My partner designed and built this himself. We're really lucky to have him

Does he do commissions, I'll make him a coffee and let him have a couple of biscuits to dunk..... ☺ Although the offer of coffee and biscuits is veeeery tempting he has politely declined for some strange reason I reckon we'd having a winning business model on our hands if the customers didn't mind waiting 8-12 months for the final product...and that's if he's not working on any others at the same time, then add an additional 12-18 months for each commission he has already agreed... There was a small company based in Germany who used to make amazing wooden enclosures for small animals and I think they also operated as a small animal shelter. I can't remember their name. They didn't ship to the UK, but I used to just look at their website sometimes because their enclosures were sooo amazing. Anyway, a few years ago they put a notice up saying they were selling their business because unfortunately they didn't have time to continue with it. I tried to convince my partner we should buy it and move to Germany so he could build enclosures and I could run the shelter... He said no of course If I recall correctly, they never found a buyer and the business closed down. Such a shame!
WOW!! That's an awesome cage!! It's made by an awesome guy!

Finally built the cage, took several months of work.... Design for easy intro and seperation, the pipe can be blocked from one and each other, to dealt with their changing relationship. Just about two weeks ago , a serious fight broke out between two goos, so one is seperated at the lowest level. The drawer is deigned for easy cleaning. There is also a smaller gate designed for dropping food (and preventing escape). It can also be scalable to other unit since the connection is pipe based, for example the dig box is an extention unit. The pipe-based scalable design is inspired by Hagen hamster cage. I found a local supplier for Hagen-type hard plastic tubes but it is very difficult to get the tolerance exact with hand forging, so I replace with the soft plastic tubes. All material are safe except for the pipe(plastic) and the dig box (Acrylic), but for now they seems not interested in biting those. The drawer is probably shallow and it is easy to have some bedding drop outside when they played around. I've considered building a glass wall around but it turns out to be too heavy to handle. Due to the size and weight I am not able to find an easy solution. But overall I am happy with this design. The goos seems also happy with their new house as they spend more time inside when they have their daily outside hours.
