@vchan I think it would be really good to extend the half shelf as far as you can to make the most of the space. claire It looks good. I think you've made good use of the space. What happens at the join between the cages, can they run freely from one side to the other?

Just cleaned the cage, so I don't mind showing it off. It's still a work in progress. My husband has made some kiln-dried pine ramps, he just needs a day off to install them. He also made tiny kickboards for around the ledges he already installed. Last, we'll be wrapping the bottom in screen door metal mesh to keep the flying hay/bedding where it belongs.

I don't think I've seen that cage before, Lacquerista, it's difficult to get an idea of the total size, I think it's probably bigger than it looks at first. If you make all three shelves much bigger it will give a lot more usuable area, you don't have to use those specific pet shelves although they look like they fit nicely, you can even use something waterproof if you use safe edging all the way round, see materials guide if interested deguworld.proboards.com/thread/17316/cage-materials I'm sure you will find kickboards/ edging great for keeping the mess in

It's 50,000 cm2. I can add some jumping shelves in the back, but to extend the shelves will completely cut off access through the doors where they are.

Afternoon everyone! So, we decided to bug a new cage for the boys, and I'm now quite jealous of how much space and things to do they have. We went from the generic one pets at home sell you (we didn't know it was too small),to one that has four floors and enough room to swing a cat! (I hope I've pasted both photos, its harder on a phone when you don't have a laptop lol!) We still have a few more bits (such as a hammock for the top right hand corner and some lava shelves to replace some wooden ones) coming, but this is how things stand right now! Bottom of the cage (if the photos gone well!) Top view! I wanted some color in the cage, hense the colorful blocks at the top, and they're getting yellow lava shelves too. Also took some advice and moved their bath so it's not right above an entry hole!! I hate the bedding which is my only problem. Can I use standard cardboard for their cage or will I have to put something on top?? If I can use cardboard I can use what their cage came in lol! Happy Deguing!

We've now got the Hammock and a long wooden bridge in there too, They think all their Christmas's have come at once! (what they don't know, is that they have!) Got a fabulous shot of Fred and Barney in the Hammock yesterday evening which I'll upload after work We're just in the process of discussing bedding & what to try next. I want to find whatever causes least mess ha!

Laquerista, is your concern about the doors, and having shelving that goes all the way across, to do with accessibility for cleaning etc?

Morning! The boys cage is now all done. They are not getting anything new for at least three paydays lol! As you know from previous posts we have a large cage with two main compartments, a total of 4 floors. We've now decorated it and got them loads of bits to chew and climb on! There's quite a few pictures below but it shows everything. We left a lot of floor space to run, hense why most of their toys hang and they have plenty of shelves Sorry for the long post lol!

Looks really good I agree it looks like a good use of space to fully use the volume the way you have. Do they leap about a lot, have they developed some routes across the ledges and hammocks etc?

Yes haha! That's one of the reasons we have so many shelves. They've always preferred climbing EVERYTHING. They generally sit right on the front shelf at the top (eye level) run down their tube onto their bed, under the blue chew shelf (not sure if you can see it) onto their branch and every route begins this way! They either go on the wheel, down the ladder to the bottom where, as you can see we took the ladder away as it didn't get used! They prefer to go from the bottom of the cage, up the shelves and jump. They petrify me with their daring ways! I sit and gasp sometimes! Lol!

I think that degus may almost be able to work out the purpose of things. Mine didn't chew their wooden wheel when it was a wooden one, nor do they chew their favourite snuggling hammock.
