I missed out on one of these cages on eBay for cheaper than usual - however, they bumped the price up this week, almost double, just when we managed to get the funds together; gutted isn't the word. Could you tell me what you are using to contain their dust bath at the bottom please? Does it have a lid?

My first attempt at cage building after spending a couple of months looking at all the different cage designs on here, along with all the info provided about the best layout. I have been lucky enough to get the cabinet and wood for free so this build has only cost me £30 :-D the top box will be glass eventually and some more toys will be going in. Before: After:

Our huge cage: We only have two degus in it for the moment. I plan to add more 2-3 degu later, right now I want to wait untill after we got a house and moved (planned next year). This picture is from when we got them a few weeks, now 2 months later there are more things in the cage, like an extra runningwheel

What a great cage, brilliant! Can you remind us what make & model it is, please? Have you found any particular good or bad points with it?

It's from the brand Montana. They mostly have bird/parrot cages. But they adjusted a few for rodents, meaning the bar spacing is smaller . And this is not the biggest cage they have I found it on a online store in the Netherlands. So far I have not found any real bad points. We only had to adjust one part, under the door, there is a spacing where a youg degoe can crawl through. That spacing goes around the cage, but was easily fixed by attaching plexiglas around it. A big plus is the big door, I can reach everywhere without effort. Without the big door, it would have been impossible to get those big levels in it lol

I REALLY love that cage!!! I have been keeping my eye out for a cheaply priced *which is hard to find* macaw cage to do something like this!

Hello Cassiemiddleton! Your new cage is MASSIVE! I am wondering what you have for ventilation in there? How do you get into it for cleaning it? It looks like it's pretty well sealed from what I could see on the video. You have lots of room in there to put in additional full levels for your degus to have more running surface, which is really nice to have. I love the light, the hatch, and it looks like it's much enjoyed by your degus! A great cage!!!

Hi Everyone. Just thought I'd show off my new build ;D We are in the process of introducing 2 pairs of females to each other and wanted somewhere "special" for them to live !!! All I have left to build is a few accessories including a set of steps to go from 2nd to 3rd level. All the shelves are edged with 50mm pine and protected from chewing with angle aluminium all the way round. They are also fully removable once the spiral staircase is removed (4 screws). There is space below the main cage for storage of food, bedding etc that is contained in plastic stack and store boxes. The front just pulls off and is held in place with magnetic catches. It took me about a month to make, mostly of just evening and weekend hours and I reckon its cost about £220. Mark.

WOW!! Your cage is STUNNING!! It's really a beautiful cabinet, like furniture!! What an amazing job you've done, and the interior space for them is so excellent. A lovely example of what a cage can be! You've set a high bar. Can't wait until you have it fully kitted and the four girls are in it. How are the introductions going?

Thanks Deguconvert and Moletteuk. It was indeed a build of passion and I always had in mind that I wanted it to fit into our lounge nicely as we have all pine furniture (although by the gnawing sounds every evening at free range time, I think the undersides of some furniture isn't as intact as it was when we purchased it) Don't tell "her indoors" but it was also an excuse to buy some shiny new power tools that really helped with the build (now waiting for the "can you build me a new kitchen with those new tools") ;D The introductions are going well (I think) The 2 pairs have been living in cages that are very close for some time now and plenty of interest thru the bars has been shown with a bit of "winding each other up" going on too !! We had their 1st meeting last weekend in our collapsible play pen in the lounge. From what I've read, we are on the right path and it could have gone a lot worse. There's been plenty of boxing and squeaking like we've never known but no "fur balls of death" so far. The lounge floor has bits of fur everywhere but that's just from the boxing. Its really strange how the dominant one becomes the submissive one the following evening and we love the way they turn their backs and raise their bottoms to show submissiveness. We are hoping that within a few weeks of meetings every other night they will become a close group. Thanks again for the replies. Mark.
