I dont know how many of you remember I reported a local garden center to the rspca because of the poor health of their degus well two weeks after the rspca visited one died. (the rspca contacted me and said they had advised the garden center to take them to a vet). I try to avoid the place as I dont want to see the poor treatment but in my job the people I care for love to see the animals, so today I had to go and this is Wat I saw I complained to the people on the tills and said it was disgusting gmabd apparently the people who care for them would get them seen too... Doubt that. They also had a very I formal Information sheet all about degus and the damage sugar can do. So what are they feeding them fresh apple carrot and gunie pig food I want to repot them to the rspca again but last time they did nothing

CHLOE!!!! Hello!!!
Oh no! 😱😢 Poor degu! That's horrible he/she is so so poorly. What can you do? I don't even know what to say. Buying it doesn't solve anything, unless if you were willing, you demand that they give it to you for free with the cage otherwise you'll report them again.. but obviously that's a lot of commitment on your end and I'm definitely not saying you should do it, because of course it depends on your personal situation.

Jesus with the wet eyes and gunky noses I wouldn't be surprised if they have severe teeth issues. Keep on at the RSPCA and do as randomname says with the council. If only you had a photo with the care sheet saying no sugar alongside them being fed apple, it would be good evidence that they aren't even trying to care for them properly.

In fact the incisors look overly long in that last photo. Did they have anything to chew on?

OH MY!! Those poor wee degus! They are quite ill! Even with all the issues we've had over the years on the forum, I've never seen a degu with gunk coming out the nose like that!! They need help right now! Are those two supposed to be for sale, or are they something like a house mascot?

Ugh I wish I could drive and lived somewhere pet friendly because I'd be driving there first thing tomorrow morning if the above was possible. Something needs doing for the poor little things. 😔

Those are very sick goos! Much as it didn't help last time, keep on at the RSPCA, as they can bring prosecution after the first incident. Where is this??
Ask them to bring a vet with them, and see just how much of a problem they have!
EDIT: I'm back in the country Monday, I could probably pop over and make a similar complaint to the RSPCA - they can't avoid numerous complaints!

So so sad, poor little mites, cant believe the RSPCA didn't take them straight away, they would if it were a dog or cat!

They are in a garden center in Horndean. I reported them last year maybe a bit longer because their teeth were so massively long. I try to avoid the place like the plague. When I reported it they didn't even seen to realise anything was wrong. I'm going to get in touch with the council and see what can be done about it.
Unfortunately they are not for sale they were given to the garden center because they were unwanted pets.

So so sad, poor little mites, cant believe the RSPCA didn't take them straight away, they would if it were a dog or cat! Sadly, they don't usually. They're not as great as they make out. Their resources are stretched pretty thin, so I guess they can't help in a lot of cases.I know a lot of people who've had no help from them. They expected my friend to take a cat found injured in the road to a vets & pay for it or "leave it there"! They seem to prefer the high profile puppy farm type situation (probably as the media interest gets them donations/publicity) They also have a reputation for euthanizing around 50% of their intake - obviously some will be at that stage & nothing can be done, but there are cases where treatment could have been provided. They also euthanize old, "unadoptable" & "problem" animals - which I guess makes sense if you're trying to aim your resources at adoptable animals & to generate more income, but it seems unnecessarily high. It's not something I would condone personally. Local rescues that focus on rodents might be a good place to get advice/help - they might get involved & come with you to to lecture the garden centre on proper care (or to take them if they can persuade the owner) Find their FB page & send them a message with the 'photos. Direct action is sometimes the only option.

ooooo that's good news chloe, if they do get involved it'll get sorted pretty quick one way or the other. Don't suppose it's viable for you to take them in? I'd be worried about bringing infection into the home if you did. But if you did, I guess some of us might like to chip in for vet's bills etc

Well done for taking action, Chloe. As random said, depending on how you get on with the RSPCA, the council also have a duty of care and power to take action.

But if you did, I guess some of us might like to chip in for vet's bills etc I dont know there not for sale if I was in my own home I would more than happy of taken them in were not actually allows pets in my flat and I've been lucky with my 4 degus and two budgies so far. Spacing would also be an issue. We r looking at moving soon though. In all honesty if the rspca investigate this properly I think they possibly will have to be put to sleep the state they r in. the center has had them a good few years now and they have looked like that since they arrived. Only getting worse. Hence why I reported before.

ah I see. It sucks when you can't take them in. Wish I was nearer to you. I agree, don't think the RSPCA will fund the lengthy treatment they'll probably need. A rescue might though. I'd make a donation to help if they did. Don't know how any one can just walk past them day in & day out & not help them. If that was happening in my work, I'd have smuggled them out years ago. Poor little guys. Really feel for you too, must be so frustrating for you.

It's strange becase all the other animals seem very well looked after and Healthy it's just the degus that are a mess. I'm gling to see I can find a local rescue id donate to then if they could take them away. I just wish I had the space
