Hey guys
Indeed it was today, bless her she's doing ok! She's obv just tired I think and still recovering from the anastetic, it was a bit of a crap day as I had to drop her off in the morn and she stayed at the vets til this evening, so I was jus tad worried how she was coping, but when I saw her she seemed active, she is eating her food which is good, and still has to be given antibiotics to prevent infection. I also separated the 2 goos properly this time as well, used a large wooden chopping board which is really good actually.. I did let them together for a bit but I think pepper is just probably drained they had a little sniff together and I've separated them for the night now, and will be whilst I'm working during the day will just have them together whilst I'm there monitoring.. i felt soooo bad knowing what she's had to be put through but I really hope it's not cancerous and doesn't return, the vet sent off sample for testing in the end I said I would rather know so in case it happens in future.. thinking to get some pet insurance quite soon now
Don't know if I'm just being panicky now but I noticed pip has a slight bump where her tail is, like a hard boney lump do some degus have funny bones along where their tails are that may poke out? As I looked under her fur I couldn't find anything just felt like a bone. Prob me being paranoid now! Can't see it at all can only feel it
Pepper is jus getting used to her surroundings again I think. She's alert, doesn't seem so relaxed as she normally is, so hoping that will pass in a couple days.. so jus to continue monitoring and giving antibiotics and painkiller til she recovers fully!
Thanks for everyone's support you've all been so kind!

So glad to hear that she came through it well. Keeping fingers crossed that it is nothing terrible, and she lives a long and happy life with you.

I don't know what the boney lump might be. How big is it? Is it near the base of her tail?
Very glad she is home now. Good that they will be testing the sample. Hope she is back to her normal self soon.

So glad she is home, alert, and eating. I think pain management for the first week will be pretty important, and no doubt her back just feels wrong right now. May you, all three, have a great nights sleep, and awaken doing very well!

Such fantastic news! I wonder if her being unsettled is her trying to understand what all the fuss is about! Is it a nice neat wound? A tiny bony bump along the base of the tail could just be calcification but, as moletteuk says, get it checked if it worries you

Thanks guys.. pepper isn't taking the medication anymore she literally won't let me give her the siringe and she's not eating it on food either :/ also slightly worried she has developed some weird cloudy substance around her eyes? It seems to wipe away but has been reappearing at random times The wound is neat but pretty large .. I'm hating having to have them separated they hate it! hoping it's not too long til I can put them back together

Keep trying with the medication. Perhaps with another pair of hands someone could hold her head and try and get the syringe in her mouth while you hold her body or something like that. If it's really not possible, it may be worth speaking to the vet and they could give you enough that you could put it in her water, although you may need to allow for the fact that this will mostly likely put her off the water a little bit. If the wound looks good the vet may give you the all clear to stop the medication.
I have seen degu eyes water a little gunkily right after syringe feeding liquid food, which didn't seem to mean much, but I'm not sure about a cloudy substance.
Are you keeping them side by side and allowing them to meet occasionally?

Will keep trying .. she's biting me every time I try to hold her mouth open and she never bites so she really must hate it!! Yeah I guess it looks more like eye bogey, so hopefully it's nothing! Yeah have been having them out together and sometimes I put pip upstairs with pepper for a little bit but it's never enough time as they try to settle in the bed and I'm worried pip will end up biting peppers back and pull out all the stitches if I leave them together for longer than I have.

sophialeila - if it helps, I buy the recovery feed and use this to get meds into my lot. The recovery is full of goodness and you add it to hot water and it comes with a rabbit size syringe. They cant get enough of it, we like to think its like a warm porridge to them as they all hold onto the end of the syringe for dear life and close their eyes while they feed. I just add the meds to the mixture before I feed it into the syringe as they wont take it on its own. Also it means they get all the nutrients while they are recovering.

So sophialeila, one week on, how's your little lady doing? Is the wound still healing nicely? Any biopsy results?

Hey guys Unfortunately it's been bad news today from the vet I don't know how to feel about it I really don't. I don't understand much of the scientific terms, so maybe someone on here can explain the report a little better for me? So here's the report ... (HIST01) Histology upto 3 sites Sections through a cutaneous mass from the dorsal surface of a 5-year-old, female, Degu (Octodon degus) were examined microscopically. DESCRIPTION: Haired skin with mass - 1 sample received; 3 sections examined. Extending from the skin surface through the full thickness of the dermis and across the panniculus muscle layer into the subcutis is a non-encapsulated, highly infiltrative and highly cellular neoplastic mass composed of large, plump, pleomorphic, polyhedral to rounded or spindloid cells arranged variously as loose sheets, interlacing streaming bundles, or in a more haphazardly matted or storiform pattern. The cells have a moderate to large amount of amphophilic cytoplasm and round to oval, or irregular, moderately hyperchromatic nuclei, with coarse chromatin, but most lacking a distinct nucleolus. There is marked anisokaryosis, with scattered markedly atypical nuclei; mitoses are frequent (up to 10 per single high power field), and occasional atypical mitotic configurations can be seen. Scattered multinucleated cells can also be found. Some parts of the tumour are markedly oedematous, while elsewhere there is necrosis, inflammation and haemorrhage. The overlying epidermis is extensively ulcerated. As already mentioned, the growth pattern is highly infiltrative, with neoplastic tissue extending along fascial planes and up to the submitted margin in at least one place, so I am afraid I am unable to confirm complete excision. DIAGNOSIS: Probable histiocytic sarcoma. DISCUSSION: The mass from this Degu's back is a neoplasm with features of malignancy. The histological appearance is most consistent with the diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma, but the precise diagnosis of these pleomorphic sarcomas is rather problematic and alternative possibilities would include anaplastic fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Precise nomenclature notwithstanding, this tumour will undoubtedly have high local recurrence potential and I also suspect it will have considerable metastatic potential, both to local lymph nodes and possibly viscera, especially the liver. A very guarded prognosis is therefore appropriate. Histiocytic sarcoma is a fairly frequent tumour in rodents, which may arise in the skin or the viscera, especially liver and spleen. Examples that develop initially in the skin, however, frequently metastasise to the viscera and the prognosis for animals with these tumours is generally poor. Chris Knott BVSc CertLAS MRCVS 10:24:40 30/01/2017 Pepper did seem to be looking well and getting back to her old self, hyper active and eating etc. But the vet said to me the tumour is bad and it's very likely the bad cells have already spread to her liver, so I've been advised to jus watch her carefully and make sure she's still eating as normal and no breathing problems as of yet.. I feel so sad

Oh Hun I'm so sorry. Just spent a while trying to understand the technical lingo. I'm sorry it's not the best news. You never know she might surprise everyone and it might not come back or affect her liver. I hope she still has a long time with you, I'm sorry it's not the news you wanted 😔 xxxxxxxxxxxxx ❤
