His teeth are definitely misaligned, so the top two only wear down the bottom right tooth. The bottom left just keeps getting longer... He was gaining weight but has started dropping again, so I'm back to supplementing with soft food and will just have to try to get to Rutland House myself this week. I thought his face was improved, but I've just poked at it again and pus has come out, again. So safe to say things are "static" - I had to drop the abx to just once a day over the weekend for reasons, and it looks like that wasn't my best choice. I'll get him sorted eventually

Oh, Titchy! I'm so sorry this is rearing it's ugly head again. I wonder what is in there that is allowing for the continued propagation of the infection. I hope you are able to get there safely and soon.

Well, I've managed to arrange a taxi that is happy to take small furry passengers with a human I'd forgotten I had tomorrow off work, so there's that bonus. I'll ask what the plan is tomorrow - we're seeing Vicky rather than Molly, so I'll tell the story (again... I'll probably use this thread as a useful starting point) and see what next. Ideally, she rasps him tomorrow and we book him in for tooth surgery and xrays next week (giving me time to conjure up the money and him a precious extra week without anaesthetic). Failing that, she does the full works tomorrow, although I'd rather she talked to Molly first if possible given Molly's excellent plan the other week. He's lively enough in himself, so I'm not panickingly alarmed, I'm just really grumpy that I can't even go a month without a vet bill at present. Doesn't he understand I'm trying to buy a house?

Vicky liked my summary sheet She took a look at his inscisors and used the scope for his molars; she couldn't see anything to say why he's stopped eating hard foods again (he's scraping away at nut shells, but not eating the innards) but as he's starting to lose weight again we decided it would be best to do his molars today rather than next week. She's going to keep them both overnight for me, as I can't get back today for them and am working tomorrow, so they can stay in the degu hotel overnight. Also means they can syringe feed him if needs be and make sure he is eating, which I can't do if I'm at work. She'll call me later to let me know whether all is well

No problems under anaesthetic! Whoop! She's tidied his teeth up - burred down the back molars, which were all uneven, and evened the inscisor teeth. And best of all, she managed to get it all done under gas anaesthetic, so it was done with the less risky option Bonus: she also flushed out the abscess that's still gently dripping goo, and she said it's very nice and clean inside and should stop goo-leaking soon!

And Vicky called earlier to say that he's recovered nicely, and the pair of them are raising holy hell in the monitoring area of the vets, so she thinks he'll be absolutely fine Apparently they were winding up all the cats... The only thing of "concern" is that she said when she burred his teeth down so that they were even, she's over-shortened the front ones as a by-product of trying to get them all to be the same length. I may need to syringe feed/offer soft food for a few days until they are long enough for him to use. But trust my two to start taunting the predators!

They're home So, his front teeth are not as short as described, but his mouth is definitely uncomfortable - he's got the "washing his face" paws going(if you've ever seen a cat wash its face with a paw, you know the shape) and he's devoured three "soft meals" (2tsp of ground seeds/nuts/plant mixed with just enough baby food to stick it together) in three hours. I suspect they were feeding him critical care, and I also suspect he wasn't eating very much I did warn them! "We have lots of flavours"- yes, but he doesn't like any of them... We have follow-up in a week. I guess my plan until then is offer hard foods all the time, and offer soft food in the evening when I'm home. I'll taper that off in a few days if he's maintaining >220g (I'll give them that, he's currently 217 and I took him in at 198). Amusing story- I booked a taxi last night to bring us home today, and when I gave the address they asked if I needed a pet taxi. I said no, I'm bringing two degus in a little box home, a normal 5 seater is fine. So I'm waiting outside the vets, and this big minivan pulls up with the taxi company logo on the side, and all the chairs bar the drivers and one passenger seat put down. Apparently when I said "two animals in a box", they thought I meant two dog crates!

You are doing such a great job!! You could have let the boys have a run with all the room, LOL! Was the driver nervous when it was revealed that the animals were rodents?

Hope Zoe does well this week and the jaw isn't too strained.
I'm imagining the taxi driver in a circus outfit with a whip and a chair for lion taming duties!

I think you both look happy enough in that photo, clearly better than burritoing him.
Each time I have to book a taxi for me and the boy(s) and say I'm travelling with degus I always get the same response: 'how big a dog is that?'
