My little dude has been struggling some more over the last couple of weeks, and has started to lose weight again. Decided to take him to the local goo guru, rather than risk the other vet not being sure and having to consult the same guru. Long story short, he's had some spurs trimmed, but also has roots growing through his nasal cavities.

Oh I'm soo sorry to hear that Bouncy, I hate the thought of any my pets being ill. I do hope it doesn't bother him too much and stays pain free. I do love your videos, they seem such characters x

When he came back from xray, I took him out and he snuggled with me (he does away from home), and he was his normal self in the car (roadtrip!!! *bounce*).
He's had a good drink, and even came out for a bit of a potter when the others are out. He's gnawed on a dandelion root too, but he's looking miserable. I heated the snugglesafe and put it in there for him, and he's been sprawled on it ever since. I tried him with some baby food, and he couldn't have had a more disgusted look if he tried lol.

Oh Bouncy I am so sorry to hear that. He sounds like such a sweetheart. He seems like hes quite bright though! They just can't resist dandelion roots can they. How is Spideygoo handling it?

Spidey has spent most of the evening hanging with Sillygoo. When he did pop over to see him, he climbed over him, tried to get his backside onto the snugglesafe, gave up, and went to see what the others were up to on their run.

I am so sorry, Bouncy! I'm glad he is trimmed, but that he has roots growing into his nasal cavity is not good. Hang in there, love!!

I too am very sorry to hear about dear Scaredygoo's roots. How is his eating? Good that he likes dandelion root. My degu Lilac had molar spurs growing into her nasal cavities and lived more than a year after being diagnosed and could have gone on longer if the other molar roots growing downward past her jaw line hadn't wreak the havoc they did. She could only eat soft foods and small flat foods. I gave Versele Laga Degu Nature food because it has many different shaped bits in it. I would pick out the small flat bits and hand feed those to her along with pea flakes. She also loved thawed frozen peas and she would take her Metacam drop on a pea (I split it in half and put a drop on the flat bit) and drank ribena-flavoured Baytril right from the syringe (perhaps the roots affected her sense of smell). Another treat that she loved were Versele Laga Crock Nature – Herb-flavored – because they are easy to bite through and have a tasty soft centre. They also are packed with some essential vitamins. As well, rolled oats and organic puffed rice and sesame seeds.... I could go on and on. The key is to (1) make sure he is eating – anything he wants; (2) keep the swelling down (Metacam – I gave it to Lilac when I noticed her becoming puffed up and lethargic) and (3) and control any infection caused by the invading roots (Lilac got two week doses of Baytril whenever I noticed an eye watering or half closed). I hope he recovers quickly from the dental work and that he has many wonderful months ahead of him.

Thanks guys. yasmin your advice is invaluable! The irony is that he always seems to be eating. Because he has a natural diet, he has lots of flat food in the shape of leaves. He's also the most diligent for going through nut shells. He will indeed have whatever he wants to eat. He loves his metacam. The vet suggested splitting his daily dose into two, but I can only really do this when I get back from visiting my dad because my mum can't make two visits a day. Will keep you posted.

I'm really sorry to hear this Hopefully the spur trim will give him substantial relief and the roots are more of a long term thing. I hope he recovers quickly from the procedure. I think it's really positive that his appetite is generally so good and he has an appetite for healthy food and chewing, this will really stand him in good stead. Yasmin, are these the crock things? www.amazon.co.uk/Versele-Laga-Orlux-Crock-Complete-Chinchilla/dp/B007MAIMSI

Yes, those are the Crock treats. My degus love them. They get one every three days; however, when they are experiencing eating issues they get one every day. I give it to them first thing in the morning and watch how they eat them. If they are having trouble and end up dropping or burying them, that's an indicator to me that there is something very wrong.

I top up the bowls in the morning, and Scaredy is usually one of the first in there. This morning was slightly different. I walked into the kitchen, he came out from wherever he'd been sitting, put his front paws on the snugglesafe, and looked at me. Point taken, it went back in the microwave. Because he has lost weight and likes them, I'm going to give him nuts to help get some weight back on. The baby food remains untouched by all of them lol. Not a winner. Think I'll finish the rest of the packet Going to experiment with different treats for him, my adorable Scaredygoo.

OK, he's not been in the wheel today, but he's drinking, very good at demanding the snugglesafe be reheated, and has tried to eat many things. He's snaffled oats from my hand, some ground hazelnuts from the top of the snugglesafe, turned his nose up at almond butter, nibbled on leaves and flowers, and spent 20 mins working on a piece of dandelion root, which Spidey then came and nicked from him. He's also become ingenious at hiding, and I've been struggling to locate him! I really wish I wasn't going away in a few hours....

At least he's improving and eating and drinking so he should be fine, I know it's a worry though. You need a webcam! Skype while your mum is there?

Been a scary day! Landed in Vienna to find an email from the vet in response to yesterday's update. The opening word? "worrying“. He then goes on to say Scaredygoo needs syringe feeding, which my mum would struggle with. Few phone calls whilst the next plane is boarding and taxiing, and I have someone lined up. Arrive in Larnaca to find another email from the vet telling me to call him. Left a message, and found the hire car has Bluetooth and receive a call from my mum, who greets me with the panicked word "disaster". What is it with people trying to scare me today??
Turns out mum was at my place. She'd opened the big cage door to let Spidey and Silly out, then closed it with Scaredy inside, and gave him his own little bowl of almond butter, oats, and ground nuts. He ate it and his metacam and ran off to join the others. Mother's panic? She closed the big cage again and let the pups and Squidgygoo out, then realised she had four goos running around! Of the three agoutis on the loose, she couldn't tell which were the pups and which was Scaredygoo! By all accounts, they were all happily running around playing with each other! She eventually put an end to his fun and games, but it sounds like he's had a lovely day! Eventually spoke to the vet, and panic over!! Let's hope he holds it together at least until I get back!

What a day!
Did you manage to find somebody who could syringe feed him? Hopefully he will start eating normally enough very soon so that he won't need it.
