Interesting about the teeth growth slowing with age Glad she is fixed up again and it wasn't too bad. Mine have taken to bathing in the readigrass pile. No wonder it all ends up on the floor.

Back to the vet today to have two more spurs removed from Peridot's bottom molars – both growing toward her tongue. Good news is that I also took 5.5 year old Ni (daughter of Lilac, sister of ailing degus Ichi and Shi) just for a check up – her first one ever. She seems to be in good condition – no visible spurs, heart and lungs good, etc.

There wasn't much time between, was there? I hope she is recovering well!

Yes, very happy about Ni. Peridot was losing weight, had moments of being all fluffed up and squinty-eyed, and she was selectively eating. It's been less than two months since her last dental work. She is recovering well though – great energy, have not seen her eating pellets yet but she looks a lot brighter.

My girl hazel has never been a big eater, but very active. Is that normal. I have hazel dental check Wednesday they couldn't see nothing due to hay in her mouth. Hoping her spurs don't come back.hazel was like that after dental work

Is it just me, or does it seem strange that there was so much hay in her mouth that her molars couldn't be seen?

Yes that sounded really weird to me.

yasmin I meant was there something worrying you about Ni? @dl they all seem to eat different amounts and be active by different amounts, it's nothing to worry about. I'm pretty sure I've had a degu's mouth looked at by the vet and had some of the teeth obscured by food. I *think* they have some sort of food storage facility or at least it is normal for them to keep some food in their mouth.

I was a bit worried about Ni because it looks as if she is eating very few, if any, pellets. She shares a cage with Shi and Ichi who are both presently on soft food (Ichi will be forever; I am hoping Shi will eventually be able to eat hard food again), so maybe Ni is sneaking food from them.
Other than that, Ni looks very good and behaves normally – very healthy looking/acting.

Took Peridot to the vet today. She's still eating hard food but it looked as though she was eating more slowly so I thought it prudent to take her in to have her teeth looked at. He found the beginning of spurs on her left side and removed them.

It has been two months since Peridot had her molars trimmed and I noticed that she is squinting a lot and eating a bit slower, so I took her in to the vet today. He filed down a very small spur on her right side, and removed a larger one that was heading toward trapping her tongue from the left side. Caught it early enough so no damage or pain to her mouth. Saw her eating hard food just now.

You're really good at spotting the signs! I'm going to try and get Scaredygoo in this week. It's been five and a half months since his last trip, and he's starting to have problems with the dandelion root.

Well done!! I think you need to offer classes on how to spot signs of dental discomfort and trouble!! Or maybe it should be classes on how to know your degus so well you can interpret the smallest of indications of trouble. You DEFINITELY know your degus WELL!
