I have already uploaded my progress with the previous cage I built for my Degus here: smithomatic-degu.blogspot.com/. I will now be taking on a new cage in the near future. When I have updated my blog I will let everyone know here. Many thanks Josh

Hi guys,
Thanks for your interest and support, I hope to start working on the new cage some time next week, as for now I will be posting some preliminary designs and scetches over the next couple of days.
As some of you may know I am having trouble with one of my degus at the moment. He has serious fur chewing problems and his arms and hands are blistered and bleeding. So it may take me a little longer to post on the blog while I try to get this sorted out. I will however try to keep you updated on my blog and this forum. He has not stopped chewing his arms yet but we have managed to stem the swelling and the bleeding has all cleared up too, so gradual improvement.
Stay tuned to the blog there will be more pics and degu progress to come, I will update you all here when I release new content...
Many thanks
Smithomatic

I like the fact that you put lots of emphasis on planning and EXACT measurements. This is some great advice !

Thanks guys, I know the plans look a bit small on the page but if you click them you can actually see a nicely zoomed in pic. might help make it easier for people who wanted to investigate my measurements.
More to come.
Many thanks,
Smithomatic

That cage looks really good! The bolts look interesting rather than glueing them together - where did you find those?

Hi Josh, the cage looks very nice. Is the total lenght 127 cm? But I am wondering why you want to separate it like this (the blue and purple parts in the picture). For introduction, one common level would be enough and when you put there the food and water bowls you increase the possibility of meeting. As I can see it and if I am right, you have the ground level, 2 extra levels of same size and the setup on top of it. I would seperate the cage the following: the lonely degu would get the ground level and most of the first level. The other two would get the rest of the first level and the rest of the cage. So, each group would have at least one complete level to run and play. Do you understand what I mean? By providing meeting points on each level you cut the space available and reduce the possibility of running.

@dingle I think that for a project of this size, glue would not be strong enough to hold it together tightly. Screws and Bolts would work better, I prefer to use bolts becuase if the cage does wobble a screw rotates in its hole (making the hole bigger!) whereas a bolt does not. Stay tuned on the blog as I am planning to post a full list of my materials, where they are found, thier costs, the tools I used etc. MaravillaCurrently the single Degu is going to be taking 50% of the 1st floor, 80% of the second floor and 50% of the top tier. The 2 degus will have 100% of the ground floor, 50% of the 1st floor, 20% of the 2nd floor and 50% of the top tier. The 2 degus will have a total large floor space becuase there is 2 of them. The single degu gets less becuase he doesnt require as much room as 2 degus. I understand why you think it would be best to divide the cage as you suggested but we are not trying to introduce the degus. We have tried many time but with no luck. We want both sets of degus to be able to reach the top tier to say hello without dragging all thier mess up with them (currently our hosue is a tip, we are burried in degu fluff!). However, I did also want to make sure they each had a shelf that is large lengthways, for running. This is why the cage looks like 2 L's on top of each other. I think that the space each set of degus has is perfectly big enough. Who knows, if for whatever reason they decide to start getting along, then I will be able to knock through the deividers and they can all share a MASSIVE cage which would be great. For the time being we are not going to force them to get along as it seemed to cause quite alot of stress. I will keep you posted. At the end, you will have a true sense of how big the cage really is and how much space they each get. Stay tuned! Many thanks, Smithomatic

Great update Josh ! From the Youtube video and the photos you have posted on your blog I can see the cage is coming very nicely. Very well done. I like the fact that you mention you are going about the building process slowly. Taking more time to build/plan the cage will give off better results in the end.
Well done ;D Your three degu boys will be very pleased.

Check for updates on my blog smithomatic-degu.blogspot.com/I have been really busy with the baby degu recently so havent managed to make many posts but hopefully I have a wave of content coming your way soon. I really wanted to make a website rarther than use blogspot as it is not the most comfortable form to use. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice web hosting service I can use? I would like to create something akin to the massively.joystiq or wow.joystiq websites if you are familiar with these. (I think they have a really nice blog layout and navigation) Many thanks Smithomatic

Hello, I just wanted to share this video with all of you, its a video of my degus getting ready for bed time after a play. I have had it sat in my computer for ages and never released it. The cage in this video is the one they used to live in, back when I made the "Degu cage (issue1)" post. The video also gives a bit of an idea of my old cage set up. Degus featured are Chewy and Scut Enoy! smithomatic-degu.blogspot.com/2011/10/degus-getting-ready-for-bed.html
