The enclosure looks great, Josh, can't wait to read part 2 Was covering the sliders purely for aesthetics or does it serve another purpose?

Just my 2 cents about one of the photos: the wooden enclosure in the post of the 6th March seems to have a very limited ventilation as far as I could see on the full photograph on your website. Besides, it is a pity that there isn't any full level.

(I assume you refer to the picture immediately on the left after the break?) If so I cannot speak for Macca per se but the CARA is suitable for the number of degus and the ventilation is in fact quite genius - the silver strip that goes around the top of the cage is in fact mesh that goes right the way round. Wish I had thought of this method. Hope this helps clear things up!

Wish I had thought of this method. It might be that CARA is enough for the number of degus but nevertheless some full levels would have been great. CARA alone is not everything. The ventilation from my point of view is poor as there is just this small piece around for the whole cage. And as far as I can see there is not ventilation at the bottom so there isn't even some air movement.

Of course I agree that the more space that can be offered the better. More full levels is always beneficial. Perhaps this is something that will be added in the future, I cannot say as the enclosure does not belong to me, I have only asked permission to share the picture.
As for ventilation - this is a tricky subject that I personally am keen to avoid until there is more information on the subject. I know that ventilation is a big point in the German forums.
My understanding is that air in any space seeks to equalize itself with its surrounding environment this is what causes "air exchange" or movement as you call it. Because of this it does not matter where the ventilation is in a space as equalizing pressures will find their natural balance.
I have my own personal thoughts on ventilation and how much is needed but I do not profess to recommend these specifics to anyone, nor do I criticize others lack of ventilation. I simply do not have enough factual evidence to say one way or another. I am choosing to remain neutral on the topic until I see the facts that will sway me one way or the other.

Hello Josh I know that this is not your cage, so my comments are just general ones. The cage is very nice, without any doubt. But I have the impression that sometimes design and adaptation to the furniture are more important than the needs of the animals who are housing in the cage. My understanding is that air in any space seeks to equalize itself with its surrounding environment this is what causes "air exchange" or movement as you call it. Because of this it does not matter where the ventilation is in a space as equalizing pressures will find their natural balance. That is right. But this only works when there is some difference in air pressure. And I do not see any difference of air pressure inside the cage and outside. Having more ventilation does not harm anybody but could interfere with the design. But: a cage is not a normal piece of furniture. It is made to house animals not to merely please people.

I am going to be taking down the "Degu Real Estate" page over the course of the week. All the enclosures on that page are going to be added to the normal blog for tidying purposes. If you have not seen these enclosures before it might be a nice little read or perhaps a refresher even if you have seen them. I want to thank the people that submitted their enclosures to me too, so thanks! 2 posts have been released today, the rest to follow. Cheers! Stormsongs EnclosureMarks Enclosure

Hello everyone , been a long while (very long!) since I last posted. I have been busy enjoying my degus into their old age and have been very focused on starting my own business so never found time to continue this blog or my website. Of the four original degus I started my journey with back in 2010 only 2 are left (and one is due to pass with us in the near future as he has an inoperable tumor on his lung). I expect many of you don't know me and I do not know how many of the original crew are still here that I would be familiar with (or who are familiar with me) but I just wanted to make a quick post I am currently building a new home for my last 2 degus to help them in their old age. I will post a pic of their new mansion once completed. I may also be looking to adopt a few degus to keep my last chap company if circumstances are right. Pm me if you are looking to move on some younger male degus. However once my last personal degu departs me this will Mark the end of my degu journey and I will be looking to give away the home I have built and whatever degus I have left (if any). Thank you all for your support over the years. Honestly I cannot thank this forum enough. Bless you all and I hope you have happy Degu times This is almost the end of the line for me.. Sincerest love smithomatic

Hello, Smithomatic! I'm glad to hear from you again!!
I'm so sorry that you are down to your last two degus, and that is ailing and in his last days. Those are hard times and it is always hard to say goodbye to our tiny family members! It happens to all things though, doesn't it? The joy is in loving them fully, and I know you certainly do love them fully.
It is so nice to hear from you, and I look forward to seeing what you build!!

Nice to see you, Smithomatic I'm in the same boat really, I've made lots of cage modifications to make things easier and safer for my girls as they have aged, it's been quite satisfying figuring out what changes are needed. I got my girls in 2010 too, and I only have Alice left and she doesn't have long as she has a brain lesion and tumour on her neck.
