Yes, they can. I've got a forage mix with them in (or I've been consistently drugging mine)

Sorry if this has been asked but can goos have tarragon? Got a whole load of fresh herbs in and it's the only one I'm not sure of.

Ummm . . . I think so? Give them a single leaf and see what they think . . . and then let it be for a couple days to see if there is any reaction. If not, try them again on a single leaf and watch again for any reactions for a couple of days. Still no reactions, try a slightly larger amount and go from there.

Hi, can someone tell me if English Oak branches/leaves are OK to give to my degus, I have read conflicting reports on a few sites.
Many thanks

Yes, they are safe. Oak is high in tannins, this is the problematic compound that you might find contradictory information about, but degus seem to deal with it quite well. In fact, you will probably find that they deal with it by not being very interested in eating oak leaves, my degus have never gone for them. If they were to eat loads of the leaves you might want to limit the amount you offer.

This might be just the weirdest question to see on our forum but . . . with such high tannins, would oak leaves make a good tea?

Seriously?? I'll have to look at that!! It is oak wood that wine barrels are made out of, then?

Yeah, I'm sure it's used for some wine casks, I know it's certainly used for whisky and the likes! Too many distillery tours after moving to Scotland

Safety of gerbera daisy? Work had a decorative one that wasn't being cared for and was going to throw it away.

Anything used in a bouquet or from a florist has most likely been sprayed with insecticides etc., so it is not advisable to give them to your degus. (Or any vegetation eating animal)

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It is a potted one. It has been in the office for at least 6 months for sure, probably a couple years. We just had a lady leave for a new job who was watering this plant and it isn't looking so good now. They were going to throw it out because of the wilting (it is still ok, not dead, but they were being pre-emptive knowing that it would go there). Does that make a difference? Or is the risk still too great? I know it hasn't had anything sprayed on it while it was in the office.

LOL! Well now you got me!! I'm not really sure. Some daisies are fine . . . maybe even all daisies, but I'm terrible with fresh foods and forage. Daisy is listed here . . . deguworld.proboards.com/post/64813/thread . . . but it says Bellis Perennis, and I'm totally clueless is that means the whole species of daisy flowers or one specific one. And YES . . . it is a specific one. So I'm going to say, hold off for now until we have confirmation from Moletteuk about it. She is the MASTER of our nutrition information for degus, and just seems to know where to find the right info to answer questions just like this.

Thanks. I had checked the DI ingredient database yesterday. They had like 4-5 varieties of daisy in the same family and all of them are safe, some are even recommended due to the Ca:P ratio. They don't have this species listed though. I brought it home with that information. I figured I can hold off on giving it to the girls until I have confirmation.
Also I watered it last night and it is perking up right away.

I found this for the Gerbera species: Gerbera contains naturally occurring coumarin derivatives. Gerbera is a tender perennial plant. It is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds, but resistant to deer. Their soil should be kept moist but not soaked.
Same family as other daisies, but different genus. And, that family of plants is HUGE, and quite varied, so I would not trust the family association as indicating safety.
Being deer resistant is suspect, since deer are just giant hooved rodents when it comes to eating garden plants. Wondering about the coumarin content, it says that it is hepatotoxic (liver toxic) in rats, and also serves as an appetite supressant.
Will be interesting to see if others have tested its safety in degus. Being bad or toxic for one animal doesn't mean it is for all.
But it can remain a pretty plant for your windowsill or planter box, whether edible or not.

I'm not getting any results on deguforum.de or degupedia so I can't say definitively for degus. I'll check my poison plant book tomorrow.
