Soo.. The vet said she thinks she saw something when they tested his feces.. So i believe she gave him a dewormer type thing.. Hes also on oral meds for 7-10 days.. And after that hes gonna get another deworming thing.. She also gave him fluids today because hes extremely dehydrated from all the diahrrea. She told me to continue giving him water in a syringe to make sure hes actually getting water. And to go on this website and order "critical care" food.. She didnt do blood tests because she said from what she gathered from Her research that diabetes would take longer to develop. What do you guys thin of her diagnosis? She doesnt seem confident he'll make it.. Im praying for the best though. Moose is a little fighter and he keeps holdin on! Ill be devastated if he dies

I think she is giving you her best go . . . and think she may well be on to something. Do get the critical care for him, and look on the foods and feeding board, there is a recipe on there for food to help an ill or thin degu that needs help to recover. I'll keep praying for little Moose. Hang in there, Dyzired!!

Between you it sounds like you are doing all you can for the little fella. I guess it's now up to him to keep fighting. Thoughts with you both and fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

what meds did she prescribe? I would have thought an antibiotic would be covering all bases. The 'Critical Care' is really what I was thinking of when I said about the Benebac, I didn't know you could get Critical Care over there, it's emergency nutrition with probiotics, my vet swears by it. Fingers crossed for him x

Most vets should be able to sell you some sachets of critical care as it's something they should be keeping in stock, not only for degus, but all other small rodents. I get mine from the vet when needed for guineas, rabbits, rats etc (Its possible the pet stores may even stock it) May be worth an ask around rather than waiting for an online delivery.

OKAY sooo I just went to the petstore to buy moose a new water bottle...and to my EXTREME surprise I stumbled across degu food!! =]] They said they had just recently started carrying it. It is Vita Exotics Degu Formula...(fortified with vitamins and minerals..high fiber timothy-based pellets...low fat vegetarian formula).....now my question is..can I just give him this and dump his other food out?? or should I mix it with some of his other food for a few days? or waht? I dont wanna upset his tummy any more than it already it...and I'm hoping a correct diet can help him health wise...ALSO...should I still order the critical care stuff online? or is a degu diet good enough?

I've been wondering how our little Moose is doing? It feels like forever since we last heard about him. I hope the silence isn't forboding, and that he has been gaining strength and good health.

Hes still kickin! You know moose.. Hes a fighter.. Hes definitely got his energy back.. Hes a little curious fellow now and he really wants out of his cage to play with rocket. I have not brought him back to work though because i dont think hes 100% better yet. I hope he keeps improving as he has been. Hes still a little undrweight but he definitely gained a lot back

That's excellent news. Glad Moose is on the mend. Hopefully him and Rocket can be cagemates soon and live a long and fun life together.

sorry i havent been updating. Moose seems to be back in tip top shape. Hes eating his new food with no fuss now.. And he seems to have gained all his weight back and hes his little chubbly self again. Hes a happy guy and has lots and lots of energy again. Quick question though.. I know degus arent carnivorous(sp?) or whatever.. But would it hurt him to eat a mealworm? I was feeding my chameleon and turtles some mealworms and he looked interested so i put one by him and he kinda played with it a little and then he grabbed it in his little paws and ate half of it.. But i took the other half away cause it freaked me out lol will he be,ok?

I think Phil was talking about feeding Edna mealworm when she was pregnant as a boost in protein. Presumably a very limited number for a poorly/pregnant goo won't do them much harm.

I'm sure he'll be fine, my daisy ate the legs off a beetle the other day and she's quite ok, I was fairly grossed out tho Like you I had a panic and posted about it, another member (think it's phil) said he'd given his pregnant goo dried mealworms as a protein boost. I probably wouldn't give it again if you don't feel happy about it or maybe google it? Apparently they prob eat small beetles in the wild when eating hay. :-)
