For now I would leave it. You have the medications for him and they should help with the nick he has given himself. If I were you I would be doing what I can to ensure that he is under as little stress as possible. It will help him to heal and recover faster. I think you have made the right decision. His weight has certainly had a significant drop! Giving him some fatty treats is probably a good thing for a little bit. Also . . . dried dill, rosemary, basil, and oregano are all good as they are calorie dense and will be good for him.

Yes, he seems happier with others and babies are all over him The cage was divided before to keep them separated so everybody have more space now they're together. Babies just discovered his huge flying saucer and having lots of fun walking on it. Also whole family moved into his sleeping bag, which is far too small for them. And Eugene, so far so good today. After 3 days just sleeping, he's much more active today, eating better (still weight only 175 grams this morning). His thingy is swollen but much improved in color. It's not red anymore. So will keep with medications, extra treats for him and weight him again tmrw. And keep u updated Thanks

So glad for the improvements!!! That is such good news. I'm glad that you are weighing him as well. That will be giving you a good means of determining how he is doing. I hope we will start to see his weight going up now.

I just wondered about the whole six weeks rule u guys talked about. Well, my babies aren't 6 weeks yet but their mum was mating today. I'm a bit confused. Won't she get pregnant because she's lactating? I thought she wouldn't mate at all.
Thanks for help

She was mating with dad. And I mean mating! He's been neutered but only 18 days ago.

It does look like mating to me. It is different to their usual humping they do. He was doing that squeaking when he can't kind of control it and she would lift up her bum to him all the time. It's been going on for couple hours, so too late to separate them. Anyway it's 21 days today since she gave birth. I wonder if it's got anything to do with that 21 oestrus circle? But she supposed to be in a post partum oestrus, right???

Just a quick response for now, assuming that they did mate.
For Eugene that doesn't mean that the neutering wasn't successful. Hormone levels can take longer to decline than fertility.
As far as Silver is concerned, I don't (yet) know what the mechanism is to prevent another pregnancy before the pups are weaned. The oestrus cycle is 21 days during which the females are receptive only for 1-2 days. Since it is about 3 weeks since her post-partum oestrus, that would fit time-wise. There is so little information about degus but there are other species where the females don't get pregnant while they are lactating. I will search for relevant information tonight and post what I can find.

After neutering it takes a few weeks for the testosterone levels to drop, so he is probably still up for some fun although hopefully is now infertile. Your female will be unaware that he is infertile, but will still be receptive to his testosterone fuelled advances.

I am not worried the neutering wasn't succesful but as he could still be fertile so soon after op i worried the girl could be pregnant again. But the problem probably is in me not understanding the six weeks rule. You see, I thought most of animals mate only when female is fertile and as she's not supposed to be fertile for another 3 weeks I got confused when they did mate. I'm new to degus so I wondered how the 6 weeks rule works and what is based on. reading fred's post i see it's not that easy to explain. Anyway thanx for comments, i'm gonna assume she won't get pregnant then. Tx
