The centre panel on the front of the wardrobe was taken out and replaced with mesh. There are loads of shelves, laid out so the goos can't fall from top to bottom. The lights are low wattage and placed so the goos have no chance of reaching them. A great project that only took me a day and a total cost of £26!!

Here is another unit I converted for my rats. They love the wire mesh tunnel that connects the two sections together!!

New here, I usually lurk though.
My dad and I just built the frame of my new degu cage with the help of a familiar tutorial. It's very large, about 4 feet tall, little under 4 feet wide and about 28 inches deep, no levels or glass in yet.
Anyway, I was wondering about the sizes of Silent Spinners. I planned to get a large one originally, but I'm wondering if a medium wheel would be okay. My male degu has a medium wheel but I always feel like it's too small even though he seems to be fine on it. Secondly, would it be a good idea to get two wheels? Right now the new cage is for 3 females and they all sit on their chinchilla sized wheel together (from the previous owner, very rusty and loud) but I'm wondering if they just want to all run at the same time or something.
Thanks

Hi Feathers It's very important to have a large 12" wheel for your degus. The medium ones can cause series back injuries. Mine have the large silent spinners. You can get them for around £20 from ebay with free delivery. I'd be inclined to take the rusty wheel away from them straight away. Rust is toxic to pets. They'd be ok without a wheel for a while until you can get them a safe one

Thank you! I just sorted out where my levels are going and I've left space for a 12" wheel. My other degu will also be given a 12" wheel. He's not quite big enough yet but he'll need one eventually. I've been putting the wheel sort of in and out for the last few days while the cage is being built, but I suppose it would be better to take it out. The cage should be completely finished by next week. The wheel makes a TON of noise as well, which is why I'm so inclined to get a silent spinner. I've very excited for the girls to see their new cage.

I must warn you about silent spinners.... that not all that silent! lol. I think they're one of the quietest wheels you can get due to the fact that they don't make a 'squeeking' noise, but you can here them! lol. There are lots of different wheels you can buy that come in the 20" size, it's just a case of researching which ones are the best I'd love to see pictures of the girls new cage! How big is it? Just wanted to ask, is your boy on his own? Has he ever had a cage mate? I have a lone male who won't accept other degus. Just curious as to why your boy's on his own. Even when they're small, they manage on the larger wheels! It's quite funny to watch

Yeah, I'm not looking for a completely silent wheel, just a nice one that makes less noise. I'm going to the pet store next tuesday to browse wheels once again.
I'll have pictures next week when it's completely done. I've decided on mesh doors since glass is expensive (at least here it is. I'm in Canada)
The cage is 4 feet tall and just under 4 feet wide, and about 28 inches deep. Very big in my opinion. xD
My boy is on his own right now and has been since around... september when I got him. He had a cage mate at the pet store (also a male) but he sold the day before I picked Boxwood up. He's very friendly and acts more like a cat (scratch the chin, behind the ears, belly rubs etc) and has free run of my room fairly often, with supervision. When I move the girls, he'll be getting their old cage and possibly a new friend. For now he seems to be quite happy playing with me, but I'm sure he'll need someone when I start at University.

I've got some pictures of my nearly completed degu cage. I should be finishing it up tomorrow so they can move in. It is 4 feet tall, about 43 inches wide and 28 inches deep. When it is done it will have the bottom and another full level along with four other smaller levels. The ledge at the bottom is about 4 inches tall and the mesh is something I decided on over glass because it costs a lot less. The mesh is the perfect size, no bedding can fit through it if kicked up. All materials (I was left with extras for repairs if needed) cost about $150 CAD, which is about $150 cheaper than a cage about half the size. We just have to cover up where some wood glue leaked and add the shelves! The top is wood with a thin line of mesh, mostly because I nearly ran out of the stuff. It actually works well because I can add direct light through the mesh if I want. And here are the shelves, you can see the opening cut out of floor 2. This cage will be for 3 females. I also just got them that Silent Spinner I was asking about before, and I LOVE it. Very silent compared to other wheels I've had, and the girls run a lot more and a lot faster. The old owner had a mesh wheel. ): I'm going to buy one for my lone male degu when I get my next paycheck. It's a bummer that they cost so much ($35 CAD). My male will be moving into the girl's old cage, a large tank, and maybe get a friend. The tank is just big enough for 2 degus, but not 3. For good measure, degu pics! And the girls, Marceline, Hathor, and Pigwigeon. I'll have more pics when the cage is done!

I think it is looking really great, Feathers!! I am really looking forward to seeing your finished product. You goos will be SO excited with it! Although . . . they may also have a reaction like mine did . . . SHOCK! LOL Mine were so subdued for the first two weeks I was beginning to wonder if I had made them sick instead of happy. Then all of a sudden they BURST into insane degu activity and they've been normal, and yet still insane, ever since.

My boys were like that when they moved out of their temporary cage (just a little bigger than a thickets cage) and into the one they're in now. They hid for a few hours and did nothing and then they started tearing chunks out of each other! Lord knows why, but I had to put them both on a 'time out' for a few hours. They were fine after that and have been running around like nutters ever since. That was Sammy and Dean. Stefan and Damon just started running around like little mad-heads straight away. They were six months old though, so it was to be expected, lol. I've just bought Elijah a new cage, since he's still on his own and not excepting any other degus. I really didn't want to leave him in the little box cage any longer. It was probably the smallest Jon Hopewell you can get. Really not big at all. Smaller than a thickets cage, but that's the cage he came with when I adopted him, so there wasn't much I could do about it til now. He's got the same style cage as the big ones my other boys are in, but it's just over half the size of them. It's 96cm tall, 80cm long and 50cm deep. Not quite a degu palace like the other cages, but considering he's on his own and gets the most time out of the cage (he's out all of the time).... I knew it would be ok to compromise on the size of the cage. Plus, it's the biggest thing he's ever lived in, the little soul I think someone on here has got the same cage for their three degus
