Did a cage clean today and noticed that they've started to destroy their huts and ledges, in other words, Reggie has taught them how to chew wood. Finally! They've shown no real interest in chewing wood before so I'm delighted to see normal degu behaviour surfacing.
I've also introduced them to green oats, its very quiet in their cage at the moment, lol.

LOL!! Munching, I assume. Green oats must be an instant hit. Destroying huts and ledges . . . are we talking preliminary trials, or dedicated gnawing?

Yeah, they were too busy scoffing to get into mischief.
They've stripped the bark of one of the legs on their table and had a real good go at the wood, took a lot off the top, and their hut has a corner missing, lol.
I'm cleaning the bottom section of the cage later today so I'll see what they've done down there.

The minute I started putting the heat pad on one of the shelves, they stopped chewing it in case they wouldn't get the heat pad back if they chewed it! I find there are specific places they hold sacred and they even tell each other off for gnawing Green oats? My lot are jealous!

bouncy Bunny Bistro do them by the 100gm, 200gm or 1kg bag full! I thought I'd give them a treat.

Lol I've just done a BB order! My lot like them, but they can only take them in small doses. They don't like having "leftovers" day after day. I got one of the BB mixes before that had a large proportion of green oats. They wolfed it down to start. Three days in, and they really didn't fancy it lol. They've not had any for a while.

I tend to put in something a bit different when I've done a cage clean as a reward. I haven't been able to get green oats for a while and I thought it would be something new. I'm having trouble getting Ratrations SAB mix so I've had to switch to Bunny Bistro mixes. They're going down really well.

I think the only one my lot weren't keen on was the herb nibble one, but only because the bits are too small. They like the degu specific mix, but fight over the dried veg in it.

"Bouncy Bunny Bistro" sounds like a cafe that caters to a high energy, buck toothed clientele.

Amber seems to have claimed the small wheel as her favourite snuggle spot. Anyone jumping on for a run gets pinned down and sat on! bouncy have you tried Bunny Bistro Guinea Pig mix? It looks like its OK for degus.

They've tried all the appropriate different mixes, so it's great as a backup! Right now, they appear extremely happy with my DIY feed (phew)

The only thing I can see in it that I've not come across before is hazelnut leaves.

Mine have had some, but turned their noses up. The leaves I collected from mum's allotment last month have raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, loganberry, plum, apple, pear, birch, hawthorn, gooseberry, and cherry leaves, plus carrot tops, and a few other bits. Now we've had a frost, I'll grab some brussels from her tomorrow!

They're getting smart! Each Saturday I clean the top levels of the cages, replace their hay, bedding etc. I tend to secure them in the bottom part of the cage while doing this to prevent escapes. The bottom section gets done on a Monday, with spot cleans when necessary in the week.
The last twice they've automatically gone to the level I'm not about to cleans soon as I've grabbed the bin bag. Should I be worried.....?
