Oh my kikgoos, i'm shocked it has developed into this, watch him like a hawk for any sign that the infection is spreading as moletteuk said x

I definitely will. He is so aggressive tonight bless him, it must be awful if he is sore and having yucky meds and trips out in his carrier so often.
I never chase him round the cage ever, I just open the door and he will step out when he wants to, tonight he has been stepping out, giving me a nip then running back in haha. No super hard but definitely not his usual behaviour.
I have bathed it again tonight but could not get a very decent look because he kept crossing his legs or having a wriggle. Looked to be some light blood this time,it did smell so unsure if it is part of some puss.
Again still eating and drinking and running about like an idiot with bits of paper towel!
See how he gets on tonight and see what tomorrow brings I guess. A monday flush out can't come soon enough. I just don't understand how something so tiny can produce a smell so bad and still seem so well. The furball is a little legend xx

Degus do they damnedest not to show any illness or weakness, so as to prevent themselves as being a target by predators. The nasty smell you are detecting is very concerning.

Maybe he feels even more need to seem ok if he can here the girl's in their cage?

If his behaviour is changing from active to abnormally hyper and aggressive then that is concerning. I would say watch him like a hawk and be ready to call the emergency vet.
Thinking about it, since the abscess seems to have burst since he went on the antibiotics, there is a chance the antibiotics aren't really working for that infection, although it could be that the abscess was just massive.

You know I am half thinking some of the aggression is about the girls.
So he used to always go to the bottom of the cage to jump on me, now he waits at the top of his bit which is nearer the girls. Some teeth chattering today too and the girls have been vocal back.
Thankfully the divide is going in today so hopefully having more time to do whatever they need to do at each other might help?
Fully appreciate I could be clutching at straws and of I'll be in all day and keep a close eye on him. I'll get you another photo update shortly when I bathe it. Xx

Can't get a clear picture, will try later. Looks the same as far as I can see. He is still eating, drinking and no lethargy as yet.
One more lot of meds and wound bathe tonight and then to see the Vet (the one that did the surgery) tomorrow morning!
He's nearly there, I am fairly sure they will go back in tomorrow and give it a good flush and clean. So hopefully nothing hugely sinister and after another bout of recovery time he will be back to normal. Fingers crossed!
Then there is the upcoming weeks/months or introduction anxiety haha. I should of rescued a cat or something instead hehe. Xx

Any updates on Larry? Although, I am probably too early to be asking. I get my regional times messed up sometimes. I'm thinking you've had most of your day already, but the fact is, I'm up WAY to late and you are still in the relatively early business hours of the day. I really hope he is doing well!!

Haha I have no idea what time it is for anyone else either.
He is the same this morning, heading to the vets in an hour so I guess that means there will be an update waiting for you when you wake up? :-) I'll post as soon as he has seen vet xx

So, externally his wound looked good today, no redness or more pus stuck everywhere.
Internally though it still feels and smells like it needs a good drain and clean so he is having that done today.
He will either get closed back up if it doesn't look too grim or she will send him home open and I'll keep flushing it myself.
Watch this space xx

Ok. Have you had to leave him with them? Yes I left him there for his surgery. They just called to say he has come round from anaesthetic well and I can pick him up in an hour. I'll find out then what they found/did and let you know. Xx

I have him home.
Not what she expected at all. She didn't see an abcess to clean out, she took out all the suture and as much of the funny looking tissue as she could and stitched him up. Bit of a mystery, but she is wondering if he maybe had a bleed post surgery and it formed a haematoma and that is the tissue that got infected.
Anyway I am keeping him in the carry cage for a day or too. Stick with. Baytril and loxicom and go back on thursday. Hopefully this will be the end of it.

So glad that is cleaned out!! I suspect it needed the extra attentions of the opening and such, but now it should knit together beautifully. Well done, love!

There don't seem to be many options for degu insurance and most people have found it expensive, I think most people put money away themselves each month to cover vet costs instead.

Ahh I see. Yes most people in the vets haven't seen them so no wonder people struggle to insure. I insure them with exotic direct I think it is called xxx
