Sounds like they were in the dreadful thickets cage. Reggie didn't know how to use a wheel when I first bought her home and caught her running on the top of it one morning (knew I shouldn't have let her watch Pirates of the Caribbean, lol)
With extra space they will soon get used to it and love you forever.

Hahaha that really made me chuckle. Good ol Jack Sparrow.
I do hope they don't injure themselves. It's funny because the owner seemed nice and a serious animal lover, just a big ignorant to the breed I think. Got them from pets at home and as they've never seen a vet I'm thinking I need to double check they are actually girls!

Definitely a good idea to get them vet checked.
P@h were forever recommending that horrid Thickets cage as big enough for multiple goos, it's not even big enough for a mouse!
What diet did she have them on?

Pets at home are selling pine cones as a degu chew toy, I thought they were toxic?
She only gave me pets at home nuggets. I saw no food in with them, no hay or anything. I had put a bowl in the travel cage with hay, grainless mix, a few nuggets and some forage and it was nearly all gone when we got home so must of seemed more exciting to them than other food.
Larry has his post op check tomorrow so will register them when I go and sort a check up out.

Beautiful!
I think Larry will approve, lol.
P@h nuggets are really boring, imagine eating the same thing day in day out with no variety whatsoever. Not surprised they tucked into everything else.

I think he already does. He was on his shelf for his meds and just reached up to smooch them both, little romeo, put him straight back in so there was no giddyness.
They've cleaned up all the stuff I put in the main cage already.

I'd put more hay in so they have forage, but be careful with the other foods as a drastic change can cause tummy troubles.
I think Larry may have answered the gender question for you, lol.

Yes Savvy lol. Gorgeous, must be so exciting to have them home. I remember bringing Joey home and I put him in our bedroom for the night. Lula, without even seeing him just knew he was in there, wouldnt leave the door alone, kept wanting to be in. She smelled him and knew she wanted him. As soon as they met it was just love. He will be the happiest boy ever

I am excited, I am very much missing Barry still but looking forward to getting to know these girls and seeing them all together hopefully. Xx

They are truly lovely!! Once you have a bit of trust with them, you can determine their sex yourself. Though if you feel a check up is in order, it won't be much for the vet to do it. A bit of a caution though . . . several years back the two young boys I brought home from a male only pet store (to introduce to our two older males that were grieving themselves to death following the death of our alpha male), had both been certified male by a vet. However, every single pup I picked up and examined in a large pen of about 50 young pups, all looked like females to me. I chose the two the most resembled male parts and brought them home thinking to myself, they are vet certified as male . . . so I must be wrong. Especially having only had males and never having seen female degu anatomy, I was sure I was getting it wrong. Until both our male pups gave birth. IF they REALLY were vet certified, that vet had a bad record! So . . . have a good look at these . . . deguworld.proboards.com/thread/13070/degus . . . so that you can confirm for yourself!

Oh lordy,
Well my only upside is that neither of these have mated in four years together so they are definitely the same sex, if that is female Larry cannot get them pregnant and if they are male hopefully they won't all kill each other.
Oh the joy of Degu ownership haha.

Check went well, she said she isn't ready to sign him off yet because there is a small lump on the right side (that is the side he didn't want to put weight on) so he will go again on 27th. She says she is thinking it might just be bruising or something. He didn't flinch when she prodded it and it isn't swollen any more?
I've just given the girls their usual nuggets, not loads and fresh pile of hay. They are absolutely storming their way through the hay. My boys normally take aves to pick through it or just pee on it haha.

Brilliant. Girls look lovely and sounds like they are settling in great and all sounds positive for the reaction between the three of them. I think it takes a while for everything to settle into their new places after neutering and all the swelling to go down, it's a good sign that he didn't flinch when she prodded it, there's plenty of time for more healing.

Things are sounding really, really good!! I'm so pleased for you! I'm excited as well, and wishing that I were near enough to meet them and watch them get to know each other.

Thanks guys! Sorry for slow reply, christmas madness!!
I am going to try get the ladies out in the next day or so to weigh them, they have bitten a lot even just whilst hands in to give hay etc not hard but enough for me to not want to grab them until they are more comfortable. Looking at them compared to larry they look huge but I'm hoping they have just fluffed themselves up.
Normally when I open larrys half of cage he will come out and say hi, yesterday he leaped out and ran round the room for half an hour and today spider goo'd onto the top level to see the girls through the bars.
Going to create appropriate divide between xmas and new year so they can see each other through the mesh. I'll have a bet idea how they will get on then.
Do you think Larry can have his wheel back yet? I forgot to ask vet, op was a week tomorrow? Next check up fei 27th. Xxx

Rather than pick them up and risk both biting and reinforcing their need to bite, do you have a jar big enough for them to crawl in? Tempt them in by putting some treats inside, then get the lid on quickly, being very careful of the tail. Weigh the whole jar and degu, (then when you are done and have returned the degu to the cage, weigh the jar and subtract that out to get the degu weight). Then you just put the jar back inside the cage and pop the lid off, and they come out, often none-the-wiser to what just happened. No hands directly involved, so no reinforcing their fear of hands.
A small box or something similar that you can easily close them in works, too, as long as it will sit on your scale.

I would use your own judgement Kikgoos, if you feel he is using his legs again properly but Larry will only use it if it feels comfortable to him.
