At first I thought I was seeing Alfie, but then realized upon reading again that this is Misty. Is she a beige?

That is her original cage? LOVE the bed!! Yes DC, that's what she came in. I mean, it's not a Thicketts, but she hasn't got much room. I got her a couple of matching hammocks too & her wheel is pink - no idea why, I usually avoid girly stuff like the plague. Am just waiting for her wheel & ledges before she can go in her Aventura, going to be another week before it's ready & probably a few weeks doing a slow transfer in (unless she loves it straight away)

Think Darth said Alf & Mist are both standard beiges, but Alfie is dark, Misty is light (think I remembered that right) Is yellow a chin colour?! ewwww.

Yellow? Not really no. You could argue a pink white can look yellow as it can have a beige tint. Germans sometimes calls it apricot (can't remember who else does it) Pink White is a mix between two dominant mutations = beige and Wilson White.
There's also a recessive mutation. It is called a recessive beige though not really beige to look at. It's the goldbar/lowe recessive white. First appeared in a farm from a guy called Goldbarr so that's the original name. The lrw was first though to be a different mutation, as I understand it there is a bit of a difference to the two lines. But when bred together they gave kits with the colour = same mutation and should be called Goldbar as that's the original name. They also go by champaign... So kind of a yellowish colour.

Either pee or just bad colour. It's not uncommon for the withe on the belly not to be clear. Especially with none pedigree animals and animals with Ebony in them

even if she's a crusty wee covered mongrel, she's still my beautiful old girl already any way! I have totally fallen for her, she reminds me of my old cat in a weird way. I'd even cuddle her if she let me, even though she stinks!

I think she is going to love her new cage and wheel This going to sound stupid, but how big is a chinchilla exactly? Say nose to bum, sitting down? 20 to 25cm?

Misty Update Gave her cage a quick sweep & wipe on the shelves today, she likes to inspect when I've finished. I have noticed she's got tiny poops sometimes, so am increasing her forage/hay. Today she had green oat & redigrass, mixed a bit of dry dandelion & nettle, hazelnut bark & dry parsley stalks & nuggets. She was really excited, digging around in her bowl, pulling the dandelion & nettle out & shoving it into her mouth with both hands! Was awesome to see, made me really happy. She didn't stay up long, but she knows it's there later. Also have found a chin specialist vet 2 streets away from me! I emailed & they said they can bath her & dry her properly no problem, just bring her in. AWESOME! super happy about that I've been spending £30 each way on a taxi to Stockton & back all these years What an idiot I am

Yay that's good! At least you've found the vet now.. better late than never.
Alfie is so grumpy.. went to say hello this morning and he launched at my finger and nipped it, was the gentlest nip ever, like didn't hurt even a bit or even startle me it was that gentle. Told him off.
Opened his cage when I got home just to have a little "hello" and he dived out and I had to wait for him to get into his bath, put my hand over the bath but as I lifted it he squeezed out so I put my hand around him and he fur slipped as usual lol, it's only teeny amounts each time but it's like man get a grip lol. Had fuss after. He's a weirdo.

Maybe you need to do some slower work to build up an bond with him?

Did he actually launch at you emily!? They do have a thing where they nibble to see if you are edible or not.

Well just sort of lunged his head forward and touched me with his teeth. It was quick; not sort of an exploring type of move. But the gentlest touch ever.. almost how you'd caress someone LOL. To the point I didn't flinch or pull my hand away in panic.
He's fine at night, loves coming out jumps onto my lap, will have chin fuss and belly fuss...
Just hates being held or restrained and doesn't like to be disturbed in the day.

He's definitely not uncomfortable around me. Begs to come out at night, which is why he leaped out when I wasn't ready and already sat down. He usually, I open the door when I'm already sat and he'll jump onto my knee, to go down onto the floor (if I have time) or if not to have a walk around my lap. Chinchillas don't like being touched or restrained or held, that's what everything I come across on the internet says. They're much more like degus than you could imagine. But less happy in the day lol. The ones you see that are really snuggly in hoodies etc a lot of people use the force method, as most forums say it's fine, as they do tail lifting, where you just force it to be held repeatedly every day several times a day. But I don't like the idea of that..

you'd know if he was going for you Em believe me. That time i accidentally scared Sir Ian he was like a starving tiger! never seen anything like it before. He just kept coming over & over, growling, going crazy running all over, throwing himself at the bars to get to my face & rip it off. I had to leave the room to calm him down. Luckily he didn't attack Sir Patrick & it all calmed down. Sounds like he was just warning you. Being grumpy through the day & not liking being held is pretty standard. I know some people like to force certain behaviours, but I just work off what the chin wants. I don't care about stupid hoody selfies, whenever I see them I wonder if those chins would choose to do what they're doing without all the tail holding & sugary treats? If so, cool. If not, why not just get a puppet? There are other ways to measure a bond between you. My guys trust & respect me as I do them. I love them, they probably tolerate me It sounds like you've got to a pretty advanced stage with Alfie already. If he's climbing on you, he's fine with you already. That's pretty impressive in a couple of weeks. I have noticed that my chins don't interact the way the degus do. There's no real playing/fighting even though my guys are young. They huddle together, groom, eat but don't look to each other for entertainment at all. Maybe this is why Alfie is like he is? He's just happy to be existing near you, pottering on with his life, getting the odd scratch etc My guys don't sleep together - one sleeps in the hut, the other stands guard. I'm not sure they're a snuggly animal in that way like say, rabbits. Or even driven to interact out of curiosity like degus. I don't really have enough experience to tell as 4 is a small sample size. Maybe Darth can confirm or debunk my theory?

Update Misty has had oat/wheat grass mix, dried shepherd's purse, willow bark & alfalfa mixed with nuggets. She tucked in, seemed very keen. I saw her eat alfalfa & bark. I managed to get a good look at her & she seems a lot cleaner. Her ears were tinged yellow & looked a bit crusty, but they look healthy now. Her sides look less yellow & her underneath looks better too (didn't get a good look between her legs) There's still lots of lumpyness to her fur due to the chewing, but overall it looks better already. Still going to 'phone the new vets Monday to get her checked out (& so I can nose around!) I made her a couple of hanging toys, she went crazy for them never seen any of mine react like that, so made me happy. She likes to strip bark off the wooden discs I used, & she loves the parrot shredder toy (woven wicker strips) - I think she's going to be a toy destroyer Doesn't seem to be any dental problems & she's not freaked out by new stuff (although I did put it where her old ones were) There is a fly in the ointment though... I made an effort to spend time with Misty late at night (around 11pm) obviously my boys were awake too. I sat back after I spent time with Misty & I saw my boys reacting pretty badly to poor Misty. She was fine, ignoring them. Sir Patrick was just sitting glaring at her, looked poised to charge her if her could though. Sir Ian (who is the guard chin) was getting really agitated, running round the cage finding different places to stare at Misty. He was nasty to me when I went over, was clearly working himself up. I moved misty back over the other side of the room. I don't know if it's just tonight, or if he's been like that the other night too. He was fine during the day. Her cage was only there 2 days. Problem is Misty's Aventura needs to go near my boys if at all possible, but I obviously don't want anyone getting angry. Any thoughts or advice guys?
