Best arrived this morning! He's an absolute character, has escaped once already and Nyota is most desperate to talk to this other degu who has moved in to his space... At least I don't have to worry about telling them apart! Heading off to reread the introductions guide again, for... The third time? Here's to a nice, easy introduction with few fights and no blood

You will once I get my laptop back from the repair place - I have a rough idea of how to get pics up to Photobucket from the phone, but I hate putting image links in on the mobile site as it always seems to take six attempts and a million curses to make them happen! If the photo has moved into iCloud I might be able to do it from my iPad after food has happened

Ok, next question. Best is really, really fast. The kind of really fast where he's not used to me enough to be picked up (and that's fair, I'm new to him), and the lounge isn't degu-proof (the doors don't fully close yet for a start...), and if he got loose I'd have a heck of a time getting him back. Equally, I need to get to know him and him me. I also don't want to disturb things by showing Nyota that I'm giving Best "preferential treatment" - so one gets a treat, the other gets a treat. That's easy enough, but I started scritching Best's ears this evening at the cage door (he's not sure enough to come to me to come out yet) and Nyota started trying to climb up my jeans... But if I scritch both at the same time, both want to know what I'm doing with the other hand I don't think I worried about this so much last time, but equally last time River and the girls were desperate to know each other from the get go, and were in separate cages - so scent mixing was not an issue and I could open one cage without letting everyone else loose. Whereas, in this cage opening a door gives me access to two levels of one goo's area and one of the other - so I have containment issues. Suggestions on how to get Best used to me and relatively pick-up-able without Nyota escaping? Bonus points if it doesn't involve him getting loose in the house - sounds like Best is pretty impressively agile (sounds like in his previous house he could and would get anywhere he set his mind to) Also, I have a nose picture. That's all he really wanted to show me today

Only thing I can think of apart from drastic cage mods, is putting one of them in a pen or cage somewhere else where they can't see the other goo while you work with Best. Probably the best way to do that with least disturbance to Nyota is to use a pen or safe room to work with Best and leave Nyota in the cage.
Uploads from phone to Flickr app and then from app to forum is very simple to do.

Any way to rig a "door" on the sliding glass? I'm thinking if I was in the same boat with my sliding glass I would try to make another mesh "divider" (probably framed with some wood) that I could put between the glass and the frame of the cage and use the glass to squeeze it closed. That way I could open the glass, put the barrier up on the level that I needed one contained on, and the door stays open for the other degu.

Those suggestions sound great, ladies. At least to me, LOL! Sounds like Best could "better" be called Speedy. LOL! Maybe Lightning McQueen, ROFL.

Coming up on 5 weeks now, so I tried a short intro last week (bit of boxing, lots of shouting, kept it short as they were being intro'd in a cardboard document box until I had space for the playpen) and one today (still in the box, but with each degu at opposite ends of the box and a treat each, back into cages when treat finished). Hoping to set up the bigger space so they can run around and get away from each other, but also so that I have room to sit in there too and separate them with a sieve if necessary. Not my hands. I have a new pair of gardening gloves for the express purpose of not getting cellulitis this time

Good luck with the intros! He is such a handsome man isn't he?? I had heavy duty oven gloves on for my intros, the separate ones you can get for each hand, they worked really well! Looking forward to seeing your progress with him and Nyota

Ugh. So today's intro lasted ten seconds and consisted of:
Nyota into pen Best into pen Butt sniff Butt sniff FBOD
Rapidly separated by me and the sieve.
Then picking Best up by his scruff, and him giving me an earful.
Nyota being "launched" from sieve to cage at same time as Best leaps from hand to cage.
Cage door slid shut before anyone gets any ideas about climbing up/down.
The pair of them are sat chittering at the cage divider. Which I'm guessing means I'm rushing a bit and I'm planning to slow down and not try another intro for a few weeks. Mostly I'm glad I a) had gloves on quick enough and b) double meshed the divider to stop toes/tails being chomped.

Yeah... I almost wish for a second pair of hands to take the photo with - two degus, separated by a sieve, both spitting mad but completely perplexed as to why they can't lock onto each other...
I think I just got spoiled by how easily River and the girls went together. I did that intro wrong on *so* many levels, and it just... worked. Lived side by side for 8 weeks, no bedding swap or anything, and when River got the all clear I just opened both cage doors and dropped River in. And it was bliss for all of them. Didn't even bother separating them afterwards. I mean, to be fair to me, all the signs were there that this would go fairly well - sleeping next to each other, talking nicely through the bars, but even so I probably ought to have been a bit more careful - it's difficult to separate a FBOD in a thickets cage.
And then these two come along and just... desperate to know each other through the mesh, FBOD so suddenly after being put in the same space together. I forsee a Garfunkel&Tibbs relationship :/

Maybe the new space of the pen freaked them out? ...Did you use a new place?
