Hello, recently means my family bought Degus, two girls. We have them home now from about last Sunday. T economy problem were facing is we don't know how often to feed them. We have bought the degu nuggets but they don't seem to eat them when the bowl is left in all day. I was wondering if someone could tell me how often they feed there degus and at certain times etc. just some basic information like do you have to take the food dish out and how often to treat them? Many thanks! JD

There is no certain time you should feed them. Everyone has got their own routines. Me, for example, feed them at night when I come home from work, and they will have enough lasting them for 24 hours. I also know people who feed them twice a day, or in the mornings, it's all how you and your degus find convenient, you'll find out soon enough Mine get a treat a day (which mostly consists of fresh greens, they love the spiderplant in our window sill), once every month a monkey nut or hazel nut. You could also give them oats, they really seems to like it. Just not too much as it's not particularly healthy for them. Mine hate them now so I stopped haha. Just a side note, always make sure there is enough fresh hay

Do you mean the Pets At Home ones? I used to when I first got them, but I transfered to a more healthy diet with more variety. Half of it is fresh herbs and veg, the other half is JR Farm Degu Adult from Zooplus.co.uk and I add some seeds as well. It's worth having a look at it!

As swiffermuis says, it really depends on your schedule, with pellets a lot of people have no bother just keeping the bowl topped up but if you feel they aren't eating then it may be better to switch to once or twice a day. For example I feed my lot as soon as I get up on a morning with their hard feed and seed mix. Then at 3/4pm I'll give them a herb mix of dandelion, green oats, milk thistle, parsley (small amount) and some flower packs that I have. For treats I tend to just give them one everytime I go in the room, and more if it's during free-range time for hand training. Swiffermuis, be careful with the degu adult, the calcium is dangerously low in it! Have you looked at the commercial feed chart? deguworld.proboards.com/thread/17365/commercial-food-chart

I also feed them when I get up in the morning, usually the pellets and some seeds in their bowls and leave it in there and they just munch through the day and night, sometimes by the next morning its gone sometimes not so i just top it up. And they always have hay available.

Ours always get theirs first thing when I get up. We feed mainly pets at home degus nuggets, with fresh greens every couple of days and the odd sunflower seed or peanut (usually reserved for training). We give between 10-15g per degu roughly, but ours run around like mad marking their "spot" (we scatter feed to avoid squabbles) and eat it all there and then so have to wait until the next day to get any more!
