General Feeding Guidelines for Commercial Foods
Always feed herbs, wild plants, leaves, stalks, flowers etc in addition to commercial food, either bought or hand collected (see various sticky threads). You can reduce your reliance on commercial food if you feed a significant amount of plants, leaves and herbs and a small amount of a carefully chosen selection of seeds.
Always feed unlimited hay in addition to commercial food.
Always encourage your degus to eat everything from a mix type food so they get the full range of nutrition.
Nugget foods are less interesting for your degus but do ensure that the degus get the full nutrition from the product. Please add interest to the diet in other ways if you feed nuggets.
It can be a good idea to mix two or three different commercial food products to reduce the disadvantages of any particular food as none are ideal.
10g per degu per day is the normal starting point feed quantity.
Choose treats carefully to add nutrition rather than detract from the diet, see nutrition charts.
Try to maintain good calcium levels and aim for a calcium to phosphorus ratio of 2:1 for the diet overall.
Scatter feeding or feeding in separate bowls can avoid squabbling over food.
Weigh your degus regularly.
Things to Look For When Choosing Commercial Food
High Fibre
Low to moderate protein
Low fat
Grainless
Good Ca:P ratio of close to 2:1 (double calcium than phosphorus)
Calcium of 1.0%
No salt
Natural plants are good, especially high grass and meadow plant content.
Not filled with by products and processed items like wheat middlings and soybean meal etc.
Not too much high sugar veg (carrot, parsnip, beetroot etc) or fruit (apple, rosehip, cranberry etc)
No sugar, dextrose, sucrose, molasses or any other added sugar (except fructo-oligo saccharides)
Variety of ingredients adds interest for your degus.
Some of the ingredients lists are more complete declarations than others, so bear this in mind for the ones that look complex and heavy on chemicals.
