JR Farm (Coarse Feed) Garden Herbs





Price £4.30 for 400g (£10.75/kg)
Great herb mix, decent size pieces, decent variety, loved by my degus. Good value.

JR Farm Parsley Stalks





Price £3.59 for 500g (£7.18/kg)
It's a big bag full of just parsley stalks, it's well liked by my degus, decent size pieces.


JR Farm Chinchilla Flower Garden


Price £5.59 for 250g (£22.36/kg)
This flower mix looks and smells wonderful. It's expensive per kg but still the cheapest flower mix I have found and the bag is really big. My degus love it and I love using it for sprinkling around and hand feeding as a treat.


Mucki Blossom Mix





Price £4.29 for appox 120g (£35.75/kg)
Expensive but well liked and good for a bit of variety. Nice whole flowers of mallow and cactus, rose petals are quite small.

I also bought a bag of Rosewood Naturals Nature's Salad (oat flakes, wheat flakes, marigold, parsley, red beet, alfalfa, dandelion, pea flakes, carrots, nettle, plantain, wheat, burst wheat, burst maize, edible leaves, cornflowers, rose petals, peppermint, maize flakes, melissa, red clover). The amount of flakes and burst cereals are really low, and because this mix contains such variety, I find it actually quite good.






In the bird section I came across Rosewood Naturals PICK 'N' FLY which has already proved very popular with my two girls.

A good varied selection of nice bits, adored by my lot. Quite a lot of pop corn and maize which I pick out so they don't get too much at once. Usually has nice big rose petals and pea flakes.

How much of tese mixes do people give their degus at once? I have a pack of salad feast and just two gus, and I don't know how much is too much? I'd like to scatter it about so they can forage. The sainsburys dandelion salad sounds good too but again I don't know how much is a safe amount to give them free access too.

Mixes which are just greenery can be fed freely, you could feed a handful and they should eat some and then come back to it later, or if you don't want any wastage, you can feed a big pinch or small handful. Mixes with grains in and other high energy things (peas, popcorn, wheat etc) like the Salad Feast, should be fed in a slightly more limited way (depending on what other food they get) start with a good size pinch and see how it goes. There's not really any harm in feeding more, but depending on their appetite, you may need to reduce their main feed a little, or they may start being a bit fussy over their main feed. If they really enjoy Salad Feast type mixes, you may like to try them on one of the JR Farm main feeds.

Okay, thanks. I'll see how it goes. But I've already been reducing their main feed because they don't seem to be eating their hay. I asked my friend to pick me up some Timothy and she bought meadow hay which is quite fine so maybe they just don't like it? I'm going to replace it with some Timothy hay this morning to see if that helps.

Good idea to try a different hay, they can have quite strong preferences with hay.

I bought the Sainsbury's Dandelion Salad mix the other day and would not recommend it. There are a lot of grains in it and it took me about an hour to sift through it to get the majority out. The goos seemed to like it but it may have just been a nice change from the dandelion-only bag I had.

The box I was using to separate it had ~1cm depth of grain in the bottom after the sorting.

Burgess Excell Country Garden Herbs






Nice mix although quite a lot of smaller pieces, the bag doesn't seem to go very far. Quite a few milk thistle seeds (shown bottom right of photo). Reasonably well liked by my degus.

JR Farm Milk Thistle

A nice big bag of milk thistle with plenty of flowers and large stalks. Extremely spiky though so watch your fingers (and your feet!), the degus have no bother with it though. Well liked by all four of mine.
