Hi Have recently rescued four 10 week old degus, my first! Had them two weeks and they are fantastic fun... Still have no clue how to tell them apart by looking but I can certainly work two of the four out by their very different personalities. We just call them "the boys". This forum has been so informative, we've researched cages, food, treats, taming and behaviours on here already. We had huge success with taming three of the four using oats, within two days they were on our hands and one was running up to our shoulders. I think number four is a sensible, paranoid prey animal but I managed to even get him to take an offset from my hand the other day. So thank you for putting such great info online. I love reading all about your degus and it's helping us to learn about ours as the port shops really are quite clueless, even the ones that sell degus! Welcome! It is great that you rescued them! I also assume that the amount of research you have them in a great cage! It took me a while to see a difference between them, most people can't however over time my eyes have adjusted to their colour difference that most people can only see when they are next to each other! Remember no question is a stupid question with goos! It is amazing you have tamed them already! It took me a week just to tame one and you have 4 different degus!

Thanks 😀 we got a big cage, the ones we saw in pet shops seemed too small for them. It's about four times the size of the one I saw in pets at home. Really glad too as they get so busy and dart around it loads. Also got them a flying saucer and a wheel which goes from being fought over to being shoved out of the way. Degus are such fab little things, such massive personalities. We're thoroughly enjoying them.

Welcome to the forum - we are fairly new degu owners too - had ours 4 weeks now. So far all good and so glad for the forum to check out anything I am uncertain about.

Hi everyone I'm Krystian. I've bought my three degus about a week ago and they are such funny and energetic animals! It's also the first time I have degus so I am quite nervous about taming them, but I'm positive .

Hi welcome aboard, don't be disheartened if they resist being tamed! Mine are all reasonably sociable, but my friend and I refer to them as the tiny cats - if they want to talk to you, there's no stopping them, but if you want to talk to them, they're not interested (unless you have food). Find their favourite treat and use it wisely

Hello Kyrcha7120!! Welcome to the forum, and to the world of degu owning! It's a ride, let me tell you! Have a really good snoop through the forum, as there is so much good reading, especially with our sticky threads. Focus on those first, as they have all the good stuff up front!

Hello everyone! I'm a bit slow to introduce myself as I started using the forum some time last week. But better late than never! I have two degu boys that I got at the beginning of December last year, and I am a first time goo owner. So I am sure that I will be on here and asking questions a lot! My two boys are called Bangers and Mash and they are about a year and 2 months old now, if the previous owner was right about their age. I tried to add pictures of them but all I could do was add these links, not sure if they work or not:

Belated welcome to the forum!
I love the pics, which one is which?
Just in case someone hasn't seen you other thread, I'll point out that we know you are in the process of getting a new cage. Can you please tell me what substrate you are using?
Any questions, feel free to ask, there really are no stupid ones when it comes to these guys.

Bangers is predominantly brown and Mash is predominantly white.
By substrate do you mean bedding? I'm using back-2-nature small animal bedding. It's recycled cardboard.

Welcome, welcome, lovely to meet you and your goos Savvy was asking about the substrate/ bedding because some of the compressed paper pellet ones can swell up and be dangerous if a degu should eat one of them. I think the back2nature ones are purpose made for small animals, but you can double check them by wetting one and see if it expands much.

They can also be very dusty, not to mention expensive when you have a massive cage.

Ah ok. No it doesn't swell at all really. Only if you pour loads of water on them. And it's not dusty at all. I have asthma and eczema so everything I use has to be dust free, and the back-2-nature stuff has been absolutely fine for me. And I've found that it's actually one of the cheaper beddings for me. I get 30 litre bags from amazon for £11.

Sounds good. But you may find that a 30 litre bag will just about do 1 aventura cage.

Good to know. As pets go, that's still cheaper than a dog or cat. Their feed isnt exactly pricey.
It's just annoying that you can't by small amounts of bedding as testers. To see if my skin reacts badly to it or not.

I find the feed the most expensive cost, £100+ a month.
