Hi, I am new to this forum, but not so new to degus. Have been owning degus for almost 10 years. Now I have 3 degu girls, Danica is the oldest one (about hmm 4-5 years old) and two degu sisters (about 3 years old, and they yet have no names ha ha ) Looking forward to hear from other degu owners, learn some new things.. We just bought a new cage for our girls (well, not so new - pair of chinchillas used to live there - but it is so big and in great condition), so will post some pictures to cage&accessories board today . Hope to hear your advices and ideas how to make it even better.

Welcome Liz To post photos you need to use a hosting site like Photobucket or FlickR. For photobucket you upload the photos to that site and then just copy the IMG link (the bottom of the choice of links) and paste it straight into your forum post.

Hi everyone! Our family are looking forward to adopting our first degu in the next couple of weeks. We've been doing lots of reading on the forum in preparation and are just starting to buy all the things they will need. We used to have cats but for the last few years it's only been the tortoise who isn't the most fun pet so we are looking forward to getting to know the degu. We've got 2 kids who are 12 and 10 who are very excited! It's great to know I've got a great place to ask questions as I am sure I'll have lots!

Thank you. moletteuk we spent ages reading forum posts which were so useful to inform our cage decision and in the end we went for the Liberta 2nd Edition Explorer. My husband will make some extra wooden shelves and levels and fit some splash guards - luckily he is handy (although too busy to build a custom cage at this point). We are getting three 10 month old brothers once we have the cage set up We've gone with the food and substrate they are used to for now to keep things as normal as we can for them during their move. They are coming from a small rescue centre and have been there since they were 5 weeks old.

lol deguconvert yes I have done lots of reading and admiring peoples cage set ups too! Reading and planning is keeping me busy whilst we wait for the boys to arrive - oh and shopping for things they will need of course. I think I am more excited than the children which has surprised me.

Wait till you have them home! That first week, all we wanted to do was watch the degus! They are so entertaining! I have openly admitted here, several times, that I really did NOT want degus, but I was out voted. When we got them home and everything set up, all I was thinking about was, "GREAT! These are supposed to teach our eight year old daughter all about responsibility etc. but this cage is so heavy and cumbersome there is NO way she will be able to do the cleaning. It's going to become all my job!!" (And it did!) But, by the time we had them a couple of days, I was starting to be won over. At the end of the week, I was in love. By the time I came on here six weeks later, needing help because one had died and we were wanting to introduce new boys to the lonely remaining one, I was hopelessly head over heels in love with them. I did all the training, all the feeding, all the reintroducing when they had a bust up, and all the bleeding when it came to hand taming and especially terrified and human hating degu. I won him over, too! Anyway, that explains my forum name. LOL! You will really enjoy them. They full of character and are quite intelligent!

Hi Have recently rescued four 10 week old degus, my first! Had them two weeks and they are fantastic fun... Still have no clue how to tell them apart by looking but I can certainly work two of the four out by their very different personalities. We just call them "the boys".
This forum has been so informative, we've researched cages, food, treats, taming and behaviours on here already. We had huge success with taming three of the four using oats, within two days they were on our hands and one was running up to our shoulders. I think number four is a sensible, paranoid prey animal but I managed to even get him to take an offset from my hand the other day.
So thank you for putting such great info online. I love reading all about your degus and it's helping us to learn about ours as the port shops really are quite clueless, even the ones that sell degus!
