I know Degus are very delicate little things regarding their diet, so I am worrying about giving them treats.
Up until now I had thought that dry porridge oats were great treats, healthy and tasty but someone told me (on here) that the are quite fatty so I don't really know what to use.
I'd like to know if there are any tasty, healthy and preferably cheap treats that degus can have regularly.
Thanks, Tainted x

They are not fatty, but they do have dense loads of calorie, which can be converted into fat once digested and in their bodies. This makes them excellent choices for sick degus, thin degus, or degus needing higher calorie intake for whatever reason. They are fine to give as treats, but just done so with moderation . . . not a free for all binge type event.

My boys love dried apple and carrot, dandelion leaves dried, fresh home grown bamboo, woodland carrot treat mix, carrot & apple sticks and also ryvita & monkey nuts or hazelnuts. Obv the really fatty tread are given once a month whereas te healthy ones are given when I feel the need. Boys receiver dandelions and bamboo every couple of days.
Hope this helps

Thanks, are apple and carrot good for them? I thought they might be high in natural sugars.

Erm I'm not sure to be honest. I just know that my boys are really fussy and will only accept dried ones, no fresh food at all except dandelion and bamboo. So I just use the little pieces as treats and they get bamboo and dandelions more regularly.

Ah, okay. Thanks. I think I might use them as occasional treats then.

They are high in sugar, and the sugars are condensed when in the dried form, so should be given very carefully with moderation. It sounds like Stargirlj has a good handle her use of these treats, and I commend her.

Degus really are quite fussy, but its not exactly their fault. I'm prepared though, I've bought some seeds and greens off one of the links you linked me too.

Fresh or dried dandelion are faves in our household, along with any kind of nut (but I keep these to only once/twice a month due to fat content). I've also introduced millet seeds following a previous threat, and they go down well too!

Yeah, dandelion seems like a really popular treat. It'll kill two birds with one stone - weeding and treating.

Thank you degucovent. I had forgotten mine have millet as well, after reading it on here. They really loveit and you can get it from wilkinsons in the uk for 69p for 3 decent sized sprays which the get shared around my animal community.

Lol your shopping list is going to be huge lol, what with all the suggestions on here. Mine also have a mineral rock, they love nibbling away on that as well. Just another suggestion lol.

Haha. I feel so dumb that I only just worked out what OH means. Lrak, your bunny just officially hit his head! Btw: I like that little gif/avatar thing - cute. I agree, my shopping list will be huge, too many things to buy and not enough money to spend!
