I have a question. If I was going to start making up my own dried flower and seed mixes, then how often would they need pellet foods. Right now they get a pellet food mixture and other things as random treats, but I would really like to get them switched if it would be better for them. Also Doese anyone know where a list of safe veggies and nuts are on this site?

Safe veg list here: deguworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=food&action=display&thread=15602Plus there are loads of other threads with natural nutrition ideas in the sticky area, safe trees and plants etc. The easiest way to get into natural feeding is to gradually increase the amount you give as treats and decrease the amount of nuggets you feed. Unless you get really expert, it's best to continue with some bought feed, just feed half the normal amount, or whatever percentage you are comfortable with, and half comes from your supplies of plants, veg, seeds, bark etc. Make the transition slowly and make sure you build up the variety of things that you are offering.

If you use natural food, what will you give them for snacks?

My OH won't let me go to a pet store on my own..... Mind you, I have a habit of coming back with animals from the adoption corner, rather than treats! At one stage, we had hamsters, gerbils, rats - all adopted and/or unwanted pets.
The final straw for my OH came when I got home with 5 hamsters. I only actually went for gerbil food, but overheard two women talking about their darling little boy "Tarquin", who they needed to buy a new hamster for, as he had "managed to kill off another one". After hearing the various ways their darling boy had accidentally killed his last 3 hamsters, I was horrified. When the shop assistant came over to ask me what I want, I said "I want to buy a hamster". When she asked which one, I said "all of them!". Well, I couldn't leave them in the shop could I?!
It was about this time, my OH told me I wasn't allowed shopping on my own anymore!

Haha, I can completely understand you there. If I could do the same, I would. Good that I don't have an OH then isn't it? Or maybe bad.....I dunno

Jenowuk, you have a large, and lovely, heart! LOL at your story. I think my husband would completely flip if I did something like that. Clearly your OH has an appreciation for your generous ways, even if he does feel the need to monitor them in person.

@ Tainted natural treats can be anything - seeds, veg, flowers, you just have to experiment to find out what things they like best.

Thankfully my OH is as soppy as I am. After I came home with the 5 hamsters, he was the one who went out the following weekend to buy a bigger cage:-)
