What are the Risks?

A vet that is unfamiliar with degus can mistake the proceedure required and try to neuter in the same manner as they would a rat. It requires a very different surgery though as degus carry their testicles inside the abdominal cavity, and rats testicles are outside, resting just beneath the skin. So . . . that means there are big differences in how the proceedure is done. Also, a vet that has only done a very few may still be less than competent. Lastly, the longer the degu is under anesthetic the greater the danger of complications and difficult for the degu to recover well.

yeah i had.
I had a ring around my local Vets today and had a few say they would do them - but hadn't done them before.
and then had another that said they could do them and have had them in before (and then went on to say they had a chinchilla in yesterday) AND they offer a health plan - so gonna go for those i think.

Have you tried to ring this one www.swanbridgevets.com/index.php ?? I do not know if they're experienced with goos but it's been mention on reptile forum as good vet practice in your area so maybe it would be worth it to ring them and see?

I had one of my boys neutered last year and the vet, a degu specialist, had a terrible time rousing him from the anasthetic, it took hours to rouse him properly and they were very concerned. The actual op, however, went fine, and I'd definitely recommend my vet although North Derbyshire is a long way from Hull.
