I'm glad it was ok. My other half says I should send a dvd hardcopy to pets at home head office. Lol. We were just in there and one of the employees was asked whether a rat and a gerbil could be housed together and he didn't know. They need some educating.

great video, very helpful....am I assuming correctly when I believe that females have more fur around thier "womanly" parts than males do? If so I think my dexter may have to have a name change to Dee-Dee (and it means I won't be going to the vets who gave him/her a vet check.....)

I don't think the amount of fur is any indicator as to gender. Both sexes sport the urinal cone which is often mistaken for a male appendage, and understandably so. LOL! However, it is the distance between the urinal cone and anus that is crucial. A long distance, so that if you were to outline the shapes of anus and cone, that resembles an old fashioned lock in a door, is a male. The female has her bits close together and more closely resembles a typed figure 8.

The only reason I was asking is that in 99.9% of the pictures I have seen on the net and on your video it seems that males have a bald patch around thier genetals where as females have pretty much more fur (could be due to the spacing between bits tho i suppose). Will have to look at mine after work tonite se if he is a he or a she....Cheers

Yes they can, but you need to have an experienced Vet, one that preferably has had several successful degu neutering surgeries. You yourself need to know that although Degus strongly resemble the physical structure of rats, they carry their testes in different places. Rats carry theirs on the outside of the abdominal wall in plain view, whereas Degus testes are placed within the abdominal cavity. Because of this difference the surgery is very different from what is performed on a rat. Your Degu also needs to be a year of age before the sugery is done because to do it sooner can greatly interfere with his future health.
