Me and my boyfriend bought a lone Degu last Friday. I don't like the idea of her being without a Degu companion but she was the only one in the shop so we give her a lot of attention to make up for it. Anyway, when I was out one day my boyfriend was stroking her belly and some blood was found on his hand. He checked over Penny, our new addition, and it appeared she was on her period. That was two days ago and there's been no more blood, until now. This morning I woke up and found blood smeared on her under belly, mostly near her lady parts. I haven't read anything about Degu's getting periods, so I'm not sure that's even what they are. I'm a little worried now is all. Could it be something more serious?

It's alright, thanks. She doesn't seem to be distressed so I suppose it can't be that bad.

i;ve had a nose around the net, and don't think degu;s have 'periods'
I;d give your vet a ring, and explain what is happening. even if she does seem happy, it will put your mind at rest xx

i also have been scooting the net and no......it doesnt seem that degus have periods.
she may seem fine and not distressed but i personally think you should hang around and get some more advice, like nicky has said, maybe just give your vet a call?
i was wondering, could she be causing this bleeding herself? maybe she is a little distressed, she has been in a pet shop for how ever long, her bros and sisters have all been taken away from her and she has been left alone until you take her home.. maybe she is just a little stressed out, animals do the strangest things sometimes! for example, a parrot will peck his feather if he is sad or depressed. maybe she needs time to adjust, maybe she needs a mate? or maybe im totally wrong?
either way, i would definitely get some more advice from someone who knows more than me...which is not alot!!!

Oh, that's not good then. I thought all mammals had periods :/ I've put the dust bath in for now and she's cleaning herself quite a bit to get rid of the blood as it's on her paws as well from when she's been cleaning.
I wouldn't say she's depressed, she's far too active and friendly. However, I will read a bit more and take her to the vets. I just need to find one who deals with Degu's now.

I've been able to get a bit of a look when she's stretched out and I'm beginning to wonder if she is a he. The pet shop said she was a female and kept out back because they thought she was pregnant. Hence why she was alone. So if the sex is wrong, they'll have some explaining to do.

I got her on a whim, so I haven't had time to learn all the facts yet. Poor choice I know but I couldn't leave her alone in the pet store, she seemed so miserable. I was reading up on some symptoms and she does have a few. Guess it's too the vets as soon as possible.

That's awful! Unfortunately it does sound like Penny. Last night and all of today she's been a bit weird. Her squeaking got real bad during the night to the point where I had to put my hand in the cage to calm her down. She's not been moving much today either, she's had the odd sniff about but other than that she's been laid in her 'Chube'. I read that the person got her Degu from Pets at Home so that would explain it all as Penny is from there and they did think she was pregnant.

She could be near, or at, her time to deliver, as she does sound pregnant. Hopefully she isn't trying to deliver and having difficulty. It might be a good idea to take her to your vet as she could be in distress. Sometimes, rarely but sometimes, there is a degu that just can't seem to deliver, the babies die, and then mum does as the babies inside begin to turn her septic from . . . well . . . you can imagine. If you do take her, do you have a carrying cage you can get her into (very gently) and take her in. You want to be careful incase her uterous is in distress . . . you wouldn't want to cause a rupture.

I'm planning to take her to a vet tomorrow. Thank you for all the help though! I'd be cursing myself if I just shrugged it off and something terrible happened to her.
